  • Borussia Dortmund – Club Brugge 3-0 (2-0)

Flanked by star wings Jadon Sancho and Thorgan Hazard, Erling Braut Haaland moved one step closer to the title of top scorer in the Champions League this season with two new goals against Club Brugge tonight.

Braut Haaland was the shared top scorer in the tournament prior to this round alongside Marcus Rashford, Álvaro Morata and Diego Jota, all with four goals in three group stage matches.

Tonight, Haaland rose alone to the top of the top scorer throne with two goals Tuesday night against Rashford’s only goal. Morata also scored one at home to Tokmac Nguen and Ferencváros in extra time. Jota and Liverpool will face Atalanta tomorrow.

Haaland’s two new full blows against Club Brügge tonight mean that Rogalendingen now have 16 adventurous goals in 12 matches in the Champions League.

No other footballer in world history has scored 15 Champions League goals in so few matches, and at least not 16 goals, as Haaland finished a few minutes later in the match.

Rogalendingen is also the youngest in history to have passed 15 and 16 goals in the Champions League. Kylian Mbappé’s record was broken tonight.

Teammates applaud Haaland’s scoring frequency and record.

– I’m happy to play with Erling. I am happy to help you, because you deserve it. He’s great to play with, says Borussia Dortmund star Jadon Sancho in an interview shown on Viasat.

After the hat trick lead on his debut in the most rewarding and demanding club tournament in football, the 20-year-old from Jæren has never looked back.

Haaland also started two of the games on the bench, making tonight’s game the 10th since the start of the main phenomenon in the Champions League. There were 15th and 16th goals. The Norwegian also stands out with 33 very strong goals in 31 matches in total for Borussia Dortmund.

– I start to laugh

Braut Haaland took just 18 minutes to score the first goal of the match (see the two targets in the video at the top of the case). Jadon Sancho played for free as Jæren’s top scorer. Haaland got it all right alone with former Liverpool goalkeeper Simon Mignolet and widened the ball in the corner with pinpoint precision.

– Erling Braut Haaland almost never misses opportunities. Borussia Dortmund coach Lucien favre he just starts laughing at the end, because the account for this guy is absolutely incredible, says Jan Åge Fjørtoft in the Viasat Champions League study about the clinical ending of the rogue landing.

– He’s a sniper, concludes Werder Bremen legend Rune Bratseth.

Just before the break, star winger Jadon Sancho doubled the hosts’ lead with an absolutely exquisite free-kick pearl hitting the crossbar from around 20 meters.

After an hour of play, Haaland’s second goal of the night came. As the ball came from an opponent, the goal was not offside. Haaland was awake and hit the wrong corner with a quick and effective corner kick.

The journey to the top

That Erling Braut Haaland is on his way to becoming both the Champions League’s top scorer and creating one of the best Norwegian sports careers of all time, comes as no surprise to those who have followed him since childhood.

– Even when Erling was between 11 and 12 years old, we predicted that he would have a great international career. We realized that from the beginning. Sports genes are very good. His mother also participated in athletics. His father Alf Inge has measured one of the highest top speeds in Norwegian football. Erling’s brother is around 195 centimeters tall. Then we realized that it would be big, strong and fast. In addition, he receives very good advice and monitoring from the family.

The words belong to Alf Ingve Berntsen in an interview with Dagbladet earlier this year. Bjarne Berntsen’s brother coached Erling Braut Haaland for ten years, from 2006 to 2015, in a team of 40 players who mostly continued until after junior age.

– I remember Erling as a boy quite similar to who he is today: he smiles a lot, trains a lot and scores a lot. So it has always been. Erling is a very nice guy. What is unique about him is that he always goes to the next level. The ability to take new levels is unique, Berntsen says.
