On the same day that Great Britain exceeds one million infected by corona, the British Prime Minister introduces several measures to stall the pandemic in England. – Christmas will be different this year, said Boris Johnson.
– There is a chance that the death toll will be double that of the first wave, said Patrick Vallance, the British government’s top scientific adviser during tonight’s press conference, which is currently underway.
If development continues as it is now, within six weeks there may be as many hospitalized and dead as in the first wave, he said.
– No responsible prime minister can ignore this as you heard tonight. We must be humble before nature. Now is the time to act, Prime Minister Boris Johnson said.
This is one of the measures he mentions:
– From Thursday to early December, we ask people to stay home from training, school and work, unless they can work or visit the hospital. You can buy food and take care of those who need it. The necessary stores will be open, so there is no need to store food.
Among other measures, it mentions that pubs and cafes can deliver food, but that restaurants must be closed for visits.
Patrick Vallance said it was important to shut down parts of society to prevent the infection from spreading as fast as it does now. The closure will last until the beginning of December.
The measures come shortly after Wales introduced a so-called “fire street closure”, with all nightclubs and most shops closing until 9 November.
The Scottish government advised against all travel across the border to England on Saturday night, except those strictly necessary.
The UK is one of the few countries in the world that now has more than one million registered corona infections. The other countries are the United States, India, Brazil, Russia, France, Spain, Argentina and Colombia.
The UK has many more infected registered now than this spring, a major reason for this is because testing for possible infected has also dramatically increased.
The BBC has had access to analyzes carried out for the government on how the pandemic will unfold during the fall. One of the analyzes says that the death toll can rise to 4,000 a day, unless measures are introduced. It was these analyzes that Patrick Vallance presented during the press conference.
