In 2016, the cartel boss Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán was arrested after six months on the run. On Monday, his wife, Emma Coronel Aispuro (31), was arrested on suspicion of drug trafficking.

“El Chapo,” who in 2019 was sentenced to life in prison in a US high-security prison, leads the Sinaloa cartel. His wife of 31 years was arrested in Virginia on charges of involvement in international drug trafficking.

According to the prosecution, Emma Coronel Aispuro must be an accessory to smuggling at least one kilogram of heroin, at least five kilograms of cocaine, at least 1000 kilograms of marijuana and at least 500 grams of methamphetamine to the United States.

He is also suspected of contributing to the escape of “El Chapo” from the Altiplano prison in Mexico in 2015, in addition to having been involved in the planning of a new escape attempt in connection with his extradition to the United States in 2017.

The FBI in Washington is behind the investigation.

The Sinaloa Cartel was established in Culiacán, Sinaloa, Mexico in the late 1980s, and is considered one of the largest drug cartels in the country. The cartels are also known by names like the CDS (Sinaloa Cartel), the Guzmán-Loera organization, the Pacific Cartel, the Federation, and the Blood Alliance.

A New York court sentenced “El Chapo” to life in prison without the possibility of parole in 2019. He was charged with drug trafficking, money laundering, organized crime, as well as several murders and kidnappings.

The drug lord was arrested during an operation in Sinaloa in January 2015, six months after escaping from the Altiplano prison in Mexico. At the time, Guzmán was the most wanted drug trafficker in the world.

– We have it. I want to inform Mexicans that Joaquín Guzmán has been detained, the Mexican president wrote on Twitter after the arrest.
