Donny van de Beek has not had a dream start to his time at Manchester United. Soccer legend Marco van Basten believes the 23-year-old will regret the club’s choice.

Manchester United is said to have paid £ 40 million for Ajax’s 23-year-old van de Beek in this summer’s transfer window, but so far the player has not established himself as the first choice for manager Ole Gunnar Solskjær.

Van de Beek has so far not started a single Premier League match for his new club.

Now more are asking questions about the 23-year-old’s club choice. Among them is Dutch soccer legend Marco van Basten.

On the Dutch television channel Ziggo Sport, van Basten criticized his compatriot’s decision to sign for the great English club.

– Donny shouldn’t have gone to Manchester United, says van Basten according to the Daily Mail.

– When you are a good player, you want to play every week. It’s really bad for a player like Donny to only play six or seven games like that. It is perceived as shocking in its own pace of fighting, says the legend.

– Should have been more critical

Before the transfer to United, Van de Beek had impressed for several seasons for Ajax and has been linked to a number of major clubs in Europe.

Van Basten says he hoped the 23-year-old would have more patience when it came to a transfer outside of Ajax.

– I know he wins much, much more than before, but as a top player you have to be critical and take into account the possibilities of playing time when signing for a new club.

– Donny should have waited for a better chance and signed for another club, concludes van Basten.

Evra responds

The Dutch soccer legend is far from the only one questioning the transfer of van de Beek.

Former United profile Patrice Evra criticizes Manchester United’s signing of 23-year-old van de Beek.

– I don’t care about the boy, but why did we buy it? He always follows the games from the stands. We don’t need it, that’s the truth, Evra said on the television broadcast to Sky Sports this weekend.

Also a former teammate and now Sky Sports colleague Gary Neville thinks the transition is capricious.

– It’s a little mystery, says Neville.

He thinks it strange that the club spent £ 40 million on Van de Beek when it is not meant to be used.

– The more often it doesn’t start and the more often it doesn’t go in, then you start to think, says Neville.
