NEW YORK (Dagbladet): Trump has decided to pardon his former campaign manager, Paul Manafort, his longtime adviser Roger Stone and Charles Kushner, the father of his son-in-law Jared Kushner, reports the White House.
They are the three acquaintances of a total of 29 names that the White House announced after Trump and First Lady Melania Trump boarded Air Force One for Mar-a-Lago and the last Christmas holidays before leaving the White House on January 20.
Sentenced in Russia investigation
Furthermore, Margaret Hunter is also on the list of those who have now been pardoned. She is the wife of former Congressman Duncan Hunter, who was pardoned Tuesday. Both have previously pleaded guilty to the illegal use of campaign donations.
Forgive war criminals, Russian helpers and corrupt politicians
Both Manafort and Stone were convicted in connection with the Russia investigation. Both refused to cooperate with the investigation. While Stone has been an old friend and informal adviser to Trump for decades, Manafort was Trump’s campaign manager in 2016.
In March 2019, Manafort (71) was sentenced to 7.5 years in prison on various charges, including bank and tax fraud, influence of witnesses and conspiracy against the United States. Part of the accusation came from letter investigator Robert Mueller’s Russia investigation, which uncovered much about Manafort’s highly dubious business activities and ties to Russian interests. Due to the corona pandemic, he has been home since last spring.
Stone (68) was sentenced to 40 months in prison, but the sentence was changed this summer by Trump, so that he does not have to serve a prison sentence. Stone was convicted of lying to Congress, attempting to influence witnesses, and preventing Congress from investigating Trump’s possible coordination with Russia during the 2016 election campaign.
Ivanka’s father-in-law
Charles Kushner, 66, pleaded guilty in 2004 to 16 counts of tax evasion, one for retaliating against a federal witness and another for lying to the Federal Election Commission. He served two years in prison before being released in 2006. Today, his son, Jared, is married to Trump’s daughter, Ivanka.
Surrounded by criminal cases
It is said that the witness who took revenge was his brother-in-law. In this case, Charles Kushner is said to have been accused of videotaping his brother-in-law while he was with a prostitute and then sending it to his own sister.
The prosecutor in the case was Chris Christie, who later became Republican governor of New Jersey and later a supporter of Donald Trump.
The pardons come a day after Trump drew up a long list of other highly controversial pardons from war criminals, corrupt politicians and two people linked to the Russia investigation.
