NEW YORK (Dagbladet): Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden has been declared the winner of the US presidential election. Still, Trump has almost gone into hiding in the White House. Aside from a small public appearance honoring fallen United States soldiers at Arlington Cemetery on Tuesday, he has mostly only reached out to the public via Twitter in recent days.
He has refused to admit defeat and publicly claims that the elections were stolen. However, various media outlets, including CNN and the New York Times, report that he really knows that it’s over.
– grieving family
On Wednesday, he met with advisers at the White House. They told him that his chances of changing the election results through lawsuits or referrals are slim to none. At the meeting, he will still have to get an answer on whether Republican-led state assemblies could still elect Trump supporters as voters and thus give him the necessary number of 270 voters to remain president of the United States reports the New York Times.
– red alarm
– He’s like an eccentric man, old and dying. Around him is his grieving family and he says encouraging things because they want money in the will. It is the people around Trump who make what is happening now possible. But in the end, Republicans will acknowledge that Biden is the country’s new president, Rutgers University political science professor Ross Baker tells Dagbladet about how Trump and Republicans behave.
Never before has the United States experienced a situation like the current one in which the country’s outgoing president refuses to participate in the transfer of power to his successor.
So far, only a few Republican senators have congratulated Biden on the victory. Many others, including Republican Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, have so far said legal action must be taken. But even on the Republican side, more and more people are making it clear that Biden is the winner of the election.
Only these can persuade Trump
– zero chance
Biden himself has called Trump’s behavior “shameful,” but at the same time it has not been overly controversial. Congratulations have reached Biden from state leaders around the world, and Biden himself has expressed confidence that Republicans will also finally recognize the winner of the election.
– There is zero chance that Trump can stay in power. Legally, there is no evidence of widespread electoral fraud. Trump has also managed to piss off all election commissioners across the country. He’s destroying his legacy, Democratic polling expert John Zogby tells Dagbladet.
He points out how the population is also convinced that Biden won in a recent Reuters and Ipsos poll. It shows that 79 percent of Americans believe that Biden has won. 13 percent say the election has yet to be decided. Three percent say Trump won and five percent say they don’t know. Trump’s own staff at the Department of Homeland Security have described this year’s election as the “safest option” in US history.
– Trump is trying to oppose a clear result in favor of Biden. His behavior is completely unique in American history, David Birdsell, professor of political science and dean of the Marxe School of Public and International Affairs at Baruch College, tells Dagbladet.
Many now fear how far Trump is willing to go in the weeks remaining until Biden is installed on January 20 of next year.
– It can have dramatic consequences
– Revenge is very important
Trump has already replaced several people in the senior leadership of the Pentagon. You can also sign multiple presidential orders and pardon people. Perhaps he can also get a new package of crown measures through Congress. Plus, it’s already raising money for a political action committee (PAC) called Save America. You can probably use it after you finish as president to control power in the Republican Party. Thus, ambitious Republican politicians remain close to Trump.
– I don’t think I can bear it if it’s no longer the main topic of the news. He can’t stand the idea of being an ordinary citizen. Also, revenge is very important to him, says Zogby.
He believes that Trump may attempt to launch a new conservative media network to compete with Fox News and that he may attempt to run for re-election in 2024.
– He really got people to vote during the elections, so he still has control over the Republican Party. But since the election, he has probably overstated his cards. He appears to be a sore loser and an angry old man, says Zogby.
A manure spreader shows the way
– Even more dangerous
Baker agrees. Even if Biden becomes president, he believes Trump will continue to have great influence in the Republican Party.
– Can create a lot of chaos and confusion as a critic from the sidelines. In fact, it could be even more dangerous outside the White House. So you are not subject to the restrictions placed on a president, says Baker.
Birdsell believes Trump is already causing massive damage to American institutions by firing key figures and hiring Trump loyalists.
– The situation has important implications. The United States is entering a new peak in corona infection and the absence of leadership through this pandemic has had major consequences. When the Trump administration now refuses to cooperate with the incoming Biden administration, the work against the pandemic becomes complicated. I am also very concerned about how this lack of cooperation affects America’s national security, Birdsell says.
After the 2000 presidential election between Al Gore and George W. Bush, it was a long time before the outcome was clear. In hindsight, several have claimed that the vacuum that emerged over several weeks contributed to the threat of a future terrorist attack being overlooked. On September 11 of the following year, the United States was attacked.
That’s why even loyal Trump supporters in the Senate, like Lindsey Graham, have now argued that Biden should have access to classified material and security briefings.
I have a bad feeling
– Unless Trump attempts a real coup, there is no real chance that he can retain power. But a coup requires him to have control over the military, and the top generals have already made clear that they will not participate in domestic politics, Birdsell said.
Without ceremony
Experts believe that Trump will most likely never admit defeat, that he will continue to claim that his election was stolen. But that he will leave the White House before Biden’s presidency begins.
They do not believe that Trump will attend the inauguration ceremony on January 20, as the presidents before him have.
– It is really remarkable and sad that it does not contribute to this traditional transfer of power, but Trump probably will not appear. Even among presidents who have had the coldest conditions, there has been a peaceful ceremony. Even outgoing President Herbert Hoover and new President Franklin D. Roosevelt shared a White House car with Congress during the inauguration ceremony, Birdsell said.
Receive the support of Baker.
– I don’t think Trump will be there on inauguration day. In any case, the crown pandemic makes the two presidents less likely to be united anyway, says the professor.
– will not disappear
Experts also expect the news image in the US to be much more normal and much less chaotic when Biden takes office. But Trump is likely to continue to play a key role in the American public.
“Trump will leave the White House, but Trump supporters and Trumpism will not go away,” Birdsell said.
Baker will not predict how long millions of Americans will loyally follow Trump.
– It’s hard to say if people will ever tire of him. Although it involves millions of people, it is like a cult in many ways. People will continue to follow him loyally, Baker believes.
