Novak Djokovic received a tough match from Spaniard Pablo Carrena Busta in the fourth round of the US Open. Djokovic had to see the Spaniard break to a 6-5 lead in the first set. Then frustration washed over him.

Djokovic emptied his pockets and tossed an extra ball behind him in frustration. The ball hit the linesman on the short side right in the neck. The woman went straight to the ground and had obvious difficulty breathing.

Expelled

The Serbian was quick to apologize, but it was not enough to continue playing in the tournament in which he is the big favorite.

The strange incident brought the match to a halt and led to lengthy conversations between the referee and Djokovic.

New York Times tennis journalist Ben Rothenberg writes that Djokovic is said to have argued that the woman’s injury was not serious.

“She doesn’t have to go to the hospital for this” and “Do you pick a record in this situation? My career, grand slam, in the spotlight,” Djokovic is said to have said, Rothenberg.

After nearly a quarter of an hour of discussion, Djokovic had to thank the opponents for the match and rummage around at Artur Ashe Stadium in New York.

The American Tennis Association, which is the responsible organizer, says that Djokovic is the puck because he struck the ball dangerously and ruthlessly on the court and with a lack of control over following his own action.

It’s not the first time

This is not the first time that Djokovic has been frustrated. According to the BBC tennis correspondent Russell Fuller, he did the same in a match against Thomas Berdych a few years ago, but then he missed the side referee.

Before the race, Djokovic was undefeated in 2020, but now none of the tennis world’s big three are already at this year’s version of the US Open. Thus, the tournament is wide open, without Nadal, Federer and the Serbian world number one.
