World number one Novak Djokovic (33) is disqualified from the US Open after hitting the ball on a linesman in frustration after losing a game.
Djokovic was down 6-5 in the first set when the famous battle came around. The Serbian was very unhappy after losing a game and hit the ball blindly in frustration. It was then that the drama emerged.
The ball hit the one-line referee, who fell to the ground while clutching his neck and was clearly in pain.
– Lose your head completely. It is almost impossible to believe. I think he regrets bitterly. You cannot get angry. You cannot be treated differently even if you are a world champion, Eurosport expert Christer Francke tells VG.
The star player was unlucky when he hit the linesman and quickly realized what he had done. He held out his hand to apologize and then walked over to see the referee.
After a conversation with the referee, it was decided that Djokovic should be disqualified. Thus, rival Pablo Carrena Busta advanced to the next round.
According to Ben Rothenberg, who covers tennis for the New York Times, Djokovic is said to have tried to change the judges’ opinion.
– You do not have to go to the hospital for this, the 33-year-old is said to have said, adding:
– Are you going to disqualify me for this? My career, Grand Slam, center stage, writes Rothenberg Twitter.
Francke tells how he lived the situation:
– Djokovic has three balls to set at 5-4 in the previous game, but ends up losing it. So Djokovic is broken. Then he hits a ball hard on the side wall and saw it back without looking. The ball hits a linesman on the neck. She falls to the ground and has breathing problems. She doesn’t do it on purpose. Hit the ball back in frustration. He tries to comfort her, but I immediately understand that it is a disqualification. Such are the rules, says the tennis expert.
– If I had hit her on the leg, she might have received a warning. But if you meet someone and they get hurt, it’s obvious, she adds.
Francke also believes that Djokovic can expect a fine after the incident.
Djokovic was the big favorite to win the US Open in the absence of Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer. Now he’s out in the fourth round.
Former top-tier player Tim Henman experienced the same 25 years ago.
– It happened to me in 1995. We led by two sets in a double match, when I hit a ball in the ear, he says during the Amazon Prime broadcast.
– Djokovic did not target the linesman, but you must be responsible for your actions. There were no other options but to disqualify him, believes the British.
