Roy Keane took Ole Gunnar Solskjær on defense after this weekend’s loss to Arsenal. John Cross at The Mirror thinks this is a trend.
In the comment section, Cross writes that Keane and other former United players are sparing the Norwegian criticism.
– Ed Woodward must realize that by hiring a club legend, he ensures that the club is fully at fault, while the manager is protected by all his former teammates with jobs as TV experts, Cross writes and mentions Gary Neville, Rio Ferdinand, Paul Scholes, and Patrice Evra in addition to Keane.
TV 2 soccer expert Erik Thorstvedt disagrees that Keane is deliberately trying to protect Solskjær.
– As a Manchester United manager, there is a lot of criticism and Roy Keane does not control the total amount. But those who sit in the television studio set trends and can control what people think, but the criticism will be there all the time. One moment he is hailed as a tactical genius, the next the opposite. I don’t think Keane has an interest in protecting Solskjær, and that he feels loyalty to him, says the former national team goalkeeper.

Here Thorstvedt partly agrees with the commentator.

Cross notes that José Mourinho had won the most during his first 100 games in the manager’s chair, and that the Portuguese also collected several trophies along the way. According to Cross, Mourinho was much more blamed for United’s performance and he was ultimately fired.
– If they are in the lower half for Christmas, it is slim. The big picture is balanced by results in other areas. The FA Cup has not started and Solskjær will be measured by position in the league, Thorstvedt believes.
Mauricio Pochettino has previously been linked to the United job in the event Solskjær is fired. On Monday, the Argentine said he wants to return to the managerial profession, which in turn set the rumor mill in motion.
– That noise will always be there. Pochettino will get a job again and it has already been offered. Ole Gunnar cannot worry about such things. He must give a damn about that, says Thorstvedt.
