Donald Trump says he will nominate a female judge to replace the late Ginsburg next week. If your candidate wins a majority in the Republican-led Senate, six of the nine justices on the US Supreme Court will be conservatives.
After liberal feminist and Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg (87) died Saturday night after nearly 30 years in office, the battle to take her place has begun.
President Donald Trump wants to appoint a new judge before the November 3 election. If successful at this, the conservative majority among the nine judges who can serve life sentences will be further strengthened.

On Friday night, Trump named his three most current candidates in a conversation with Kentucky Sen. Mitch McConnell, according to sources at The New York Times:
- Amy Coney Barrett (48) from New Orleans. The law professor will be Trump’s favorite. Barrett is popular with abortion opponents and was among the finalists in the previous round when a new Supreme Court justice was appointed. At the time, Trump said he “saved her for Ginsburg.” Barrett grew up in New Orleans as one of seven siblings in a Catholic family, has had seven children, and is now a practicing Catholic. On several occasions it has been questioned whether his beliefs make him morally critical in jurisprudence.
- Barbara Lagoa (52) from Miami. Cuban-American Lagoa was the first with a Latino background to become a Supreme Court justice in his home state of Florida.
- Amul R. Thapar (51) from Michigan. Given that Trump publicly says he wants a woman, Thapar is less likely. It has been relevant to the Supreme Court for a long time.
On Saturday night, Trump described both Coney Barrett and Lagoa as “highly respected” judges when he spoke to reporters before leaving for North Carolina.
Opponent of abortion
Amy Coney Barrett is Catholic and socially conservative. As an employee of Notre Dame Catholic University in Indiana, Barret has joined the anti-abortion group Faculty for Life. In 2015, she signed a joint letter supporting the “value of human life from conception to natural death”, and that marriage “is based on an inextricable obligation between a man and a woman.”
He has criticized Roe v. Wade, the 1973 Supreme Court ruling that led to the legalization of abortion in the United States. However, he has also said that the court is unlikely to overturn this decision, Forbes writes.

Trump has already appointed two Supreme Court justices in his first term: Neil Gorsuch and Brett Kavanaugh.
If a third judge is appointed now, the conservative majority in court will be six to three, a weight that will remain locked in for many years.
