– By June 15, consideration will be given to changing travel tips to the Nordic countries. By July 20, consideration will be given to changing the travel advice for other nearby European countries, Erna Solberg said during Friday’s press conference.
Bjørg Marit Andersen, a former consultant and infection control expert at the University Hospital of Oslo, cannot believe that it is possible to open on June 15.
Free to travel inland in Norway this summer
– I must say that it is very worrying that they have an evaluation on the opening of trips to Sweden and the other Nordic countries from June 15. These are countries where there is still a rise in infection rates and death rates, says the infection protection expert at TV 2.
– The openness to travel between the Nordic countries is unjustifiable and unthinkable. We expose our population to infection from countries that have been more affected than us, he continues.
Infection protection expert warns against traveling abroad year-round.
– Travel bans during the year are invaluable in protecting the population from a further spread of infection, unless absolutely necessary. We know very little about what immunity is like in Norway, says the expert.
Sweden with high mortality
Andersen says Norway is at risk of opening a border with Sweden where mortality is on top of the world for those who have been infected.
– We have a completely different development from Sweden. In Norway, there are only between 10 and 40 new cases of infection every day. Andersen says it’s too risky to open there this summer.
Andersen is supported by Ørjan Olsvik, professor at the Institute of Medical Biology at the Arctic University in Norway.
– Sweden does not have border control with other countries, so it is not a country that wants it. We must do what we can to get society back on track, ”he says.
Sweden has chosen a strategy called collective immunity, which occurs when many have become infected and recovered. Norway has chosen a strategy to curb its spread by introducing measures to prevent infection.
Warns against Denmark
The expert adds that traveling to Denmark can have great consequences for Norway because we have different guidelines for quarantine.
– Denmark has completely different guidelines than Norway. In Denmark, they continue to work and remain outdoors, despite having been in contact with other infected people. Lately, we have seen an increase in the number of people infected in Denmark, she says.
Travel to Finland and Iceland
Olsvik has already told TV 2 that the Nordic countries Iceland and Finland are the closest to opening the borders.
– Finland is perhaps my favorite country because of how they handled the outbreak in the initial phase; they isolated the main source of infection, Helsinki, for a period. Finland is the most obvious country to which one should be able to open up, says Olsvik.
– Iceland shouldn’t be a big problem to open either. Their level of infection is almost zero, and they have even opened up to the Faroe Islands and Greenland.
