Natural grass advocates lined up at the digital lectern during Brann’s extraordinary annual gathering, and perhaps that’s how they got the most. Because Brann maintains natural grass in the Stadium.

This was the result after the 237 vote recount: 130 voted against the board’s proposal to switch to artificial turf before the start of the series this year, while 107 voted in favor. That means there will be no artificial turf at Brann Stadium, contrary to most advanced advice.

This gives the 102-year-old surface more life. Brann’s board, management and sports management wanted the opposite: they believe that the training conditions on the natural grass pitches at Nymark’s facilities outside Brann Stadium are not good enough, and that the club loses training in a surface and playing matches on another.

Coach Kåre Ingebrigtsen reports the following to VG shortly after the member democracy overruled the management recommendation:

– I have no comment, writes Brann’s trainer in a text message.

President Evid Lunde has also distinguished himself as an artificial turf champion. He closed the annual meeting with the following observation:

– We must get the best of what is and improve quality. Even if we don’t think it’s going that fast, we should try to make the most of it. We have received many inputs on the process and concrete measures. This is valuable for a club, but it is also important that there is progress in the club. The thought focuses on the duration of the processes that we must have. We will discuss this in the future. Things are going fast in the business world and Sportsklubben Brann has to keep up with the speed that exists, says Lunde after the battle for a new carpet was lost.

– The council is fully aware that this is the opinion of the members. We will continue with a new lease on the terms we have today, says Brann’s chairman of the board.

– I thrive very well in the grass! Now we have to work to get the best possible training conditions, Brann’s goalkeeper Håkon Opdal reacts to VG.

– Based on how the players have described the training conditions: Is this decision a sporting setback for Brann in the short term?

– It depends on how the training conditions are this year. It all depends on it. You have to work hard to get your best, says the 38-year-old.

In 2019, the Brann Stadium turf was the second best in the Elite Series.

– This is pretty! Incredibly good news. Now I hope that we can look further and that everyone can go in the same direction. It is good to see that so many are getting involved in the club. It is one of the best values of the club. It’s also great that one of the best and most important lawns in the country remains, says Brann supporter Gjert Moldestad.

He was one of several who spoke at the extraordinary annual meeting and thought that the prosecution of Brann’s case appeared to be a rush job. Originally, Brann’s board could only be held accountable for the decision, thanks to a decision made at the annual meeting just seven years ago.

But the pressure and dissatisfaction in the direction of the club’s management led to an extraordinary annual meeting, solely to say yes or no to artificial turf. It took more than three hours. And with one exception, all the speeches and contributions from club members were a resounding no to artificial turf at Brann Stadium.

– Fire means a lot to the members. It also shows the importance of having good processes. Brann didn’t do a good job here on the artificial turf. That it has lasted so long is because many are concerned and because this is an unusually important issue for us, says Moldestad.

President Morten Kokkim in Lillestrøm, one of the remaining natural grass clubs in the Eliteserien, is very pleased that Brann Stadium continues with the same acreage as in Åråsen:

– A suitable stadium is better suited to the pitch. It is therefore gratifying that a traditional club like Brann is still playing for real. Then we can expect them to get their training conditions in order, says Kokkim.
