Alexander Blonz was due to play Switzerland, but the winger was injured in the warm-up and remained on the bench throughout the game when the Norwegian team claimed their first win in Egypt.
It might look like the 20-year-old’s left knee gave way during the warm-up, a knee he’s struggled with before. This fall, the Elverum player had his kneecap popped out.
Now he fears that the World Cup could be on his side.
– Yes of course. It was a thought that immediately came to mind, and that thought is still there, Blonz tells TV 2.
– How is that feeling?
– I choose not to think about that, we’ll see later, he says.
– You think you’re still playing?
– 50/50, maybe, he says.
– It felt as if the knee had been dislocated halfway. It hurt there and then, but otherwise it has only been painful. It is very uncertain. I don’t have much pain. I can walk and jog very well. It takes a lot to trust the knee. We have to see when we get to the hotel.
National team doctor Thomas Torgalsen says Blonz will now be examined more closely at the hotel.
– It’s almost like when you take a step, but not completely and it still hurts. We tested it and found no signs of a new knee injury, but we’ll take a closer look at it at the hotel, Torgalsen tells TV 2.
– He felt a bit insecure in the knee, and then we know that it is not good to play and that you are more exposed to new injuries, so we let him sit on the bench, says Torgalsen.
For TV 2, the manager of the national team Christian Berge confirms that it may be relevant to fly in replacement of the young winger. In that case, Aalborg player Sebastian Barthold will be an obvious candidate.
