Bjørn Dæhlie (53) has bought a new house in the municipality of Bø in Vesterålen. The municipality has drawn attention by cutting the wealth tax.
Mayor Sture Pedersen (H) reached out to Dæhlie on Monday and welcomes the king of skiing:
– Here are good conditions for skiing, he tells VG.
It was Vesteraalens Avis who reported on the purchase of the home. Dæhlie is said to have made NOK 1.2 million for the 1963 house. It is not known if the 53-year-old plans to settle in Bø or why he bought the house.
– I was surprised, but I was also happy when I found out who had bought our house. I watched television closely when she had her heyday as a cross-country skier, home saleswoman Inger Helene Solheim tells Bladet Vesterålen.

The municipality of Bø has previously received the label ‘Norway’s response to Monaco’. On New Years, the municipality cuts the controversial wealth tax.
The wealth tax in Norway is currently 0.85 percent, after a lower deduction has been deducted. In Bø, the total wealth tax will be reduced to 0.35 percent. The municipality has already experienced an effect where several billionaires have reported moving to the Nordland municipality.
– There are several who believe that they are only fleeing to avoid taxes, but many will contribute positively to Bø and the district of Norway, says Mayor Pedersen.
According to Finansavisen, Dæhlie had taxable assets of NOK 415 million last year. The former ski hero has invested much of his fortune in real estate, and Dæhlie’s real values are probably much higher.
VG has been unable to get a comment from Bjørn Dæhlie on the purchase of the home.

The mayor of Bø drew attention when he launched radical fiscal control last year. For Pedersen, it’s about the future of the municipality. Bø has been characterized by evictions for many years, but the estate tax cut is now attracting new forces to the island municipality of just over 2,500 inhabitants.
– I am looking for people who want to invest and create jobs in Bø. More have come to me, and I know more to come in the future. I am concerned that they contribute constructively. We depend on raising capital to survive as a municipality, says Pedersen.
He is disappointed in the Norwegian state. Bø has few government jobs, which means that the mayor remains free for the private sector. In the future, it will focus, among other things, on tourism.
– I know of planned investments in the class of one hundred million in Bø. It will be a fairly strong investment and we must have new jobs to survive as a municipality. The public sector in Norway has left us, but Bjørn and others with him are involved and contributing positively, Pedersen believes.

In the 2019 city council elections, Pedersen and the Conservatives received 57.5 percent of the vote.
Bjørn Dæhlie has eight Olympic golds and nine World Cup golds as a cross-country skier. In total, he won 29 medals in major championships before retiring in 2001. After his career, he has concentrated primarily on business. Among other things, he has developed his own clothing brand through the company BJ Sport AS and invested heavily in real estate.
