Liverpool were looking to make up for losing points against West Bromwich in the previous league round when they traveled northeast of Newcastle. Instead, it should be another frustrating evening for Jürgen Klopp’s men.
Whatever the outcome, the reigning champions would celebrate New Year’s Eve as league leaders. But a huge loss of opportunities means the league leader only took one new point. Manchester United’s lead in second place is three points, but Liverpool have played one more match.
An even and goalless first half, in which Newcastle started long before the visitors took more and more control, was followed by a round in which Liverpool took advantage of several big chances. Mohamed Salah, Roberto Firmino and Sadio Mané had a chance to secure a lead and three points, but it wouldn’t work against Karl Darlow and Newcastle.
– We create chances, incredible chances, but we don’t put them and therefore it will be 0-0. I enjoyed the fight. We are not happy with the result, but I am happy with the performance, says Klopp after the match.
Wilson Dangers and Salah Chance
Before kick-off, there were 14 teams between them on the table. Still, it was the home team that got off to the best start at St. James’ Park.
After Joel Matip’s injury in the 1-1 game against West Bromwich, manager Jürgen Klopp decided to put Nathaniel Phillips in central defense alongside Fabinho.

Shortly after, Roberto Firmino tried to serve Andy Robertson after a great Liverpool game, but the Scotsman could not control the Brazilian’s pass in the Newcastle field. In overtime, Firmino put up good power on a header, but again Darlow kept pace with a brilliant save.
0-0 at halftime.
Loss of opportunity
After the break, Liverpool continued to pursue the lead. In the 54th minute, Sadio Mané made a pass down the right and was very close to equalizing for the hosts, but could not clear the ball. It was the only shot of the round until 65 was played.
Once again, it was Salah who should have a great opportunity for Klopp’s team. Firmino dribbled two men before finding the available Egyptian on the Newcastle field. With his usually clinical left foot, Salah fired wide. A great opportunity
Two minutes later, Firmino missed another great opportunity for the league leader. Unmarked, Liverpool’s number nine headed outside after a corner kick.

Liverpool have been injured this season. To the delight of the fans, Thiago Alcántara came in from the bench after a long injury break with just over a quarter of an hour on the clock.
The Spaniard tried half volleyball immediately after his inning, but the attempt was blocked.

With just over ten minutes to go, Newcastle had a great opportunity to take the lead, towards the end of the game. Matt Ritchie’s precise post after a free kick was directed into the far corner by Kieran Clark, but Allison Becker defended masterfully.
– A class rescue of the best soccer goalkeeper in the world, commented Semb.
Shortly after, it was again Liverpool who approached. An Alexander-Arnold cross was hit at Mané by Darlow, but just before the ball passed over the goal line, Fabian Schär slipped in and prevented Liverpool from scoring.
– It is incredible that Mané does not score there, said the TV 2 soccer expert about the situation.
Two minutes before the end, Liverpool had another gigantic opportunity after a corner kick, but Darlow fell quickly before Newcastle’s defense finally cleared.
Newcastle withstood the pressure towards the end and the match ended without a goal, but with one point for each of the teams.
