In January 2021, American politician Sarah McBride writes history.
– I am hopeful that LGBTQ kids here in Delaware, or really anywhere in this country, can see the results and know that our democracy is big enough for them too.
That’s what Sarah McBride (30) said in her victory speech on November 4. She had just won a Senate seat in the state of Delaware.
Top-ranked trans person in America
The Democrat overwhelmingly won over his opponent, Republican Steve Washington. He received more than 70 percent of the votes. Therefore, he replaces Democrat Harris McDowell, who has been a member of the State Senate since 1976.
The 30-year-old thus becomes the first trans person to be elected as a state senator in the country. That makes her the highest ranked trans person in American history.
Trans rights activist
McBride had been a White House intern when Obama was in power. In 2016, she wrote history in the Democratic National Assembly, as the first trans person to speak in a National Assembly.
The young Democrat has long fought for LGBTQ rights in Delaware. Previously, she worked as a national press secretary and activist for the “Human Rights Campaign” interest group.
Already when she was 22 years old, she was credited with contributing to Delaware legislation that would prohibit discrimination on the basis of gender identity.
– What would Andy do?
McBride wants to continue the fight with her late husband, Andrew Cray. He died of cancer four days after his wedding.
– Every day since then, I’ve been thinking, “What would Andy do?” McBride told Elle magazine in early November.
The husband was himself a transgender person and an attorney for the Center for American Progress. He also fought for the health and rights of transgender people, he tells the magazine.
Cray was honored by Obama after his death for his work to ensure comprehensive and affordable health insurance for people in the LGBTQ community in the United States.
“Are you a girl or a boy?”
Recently, she received a message from an anonymous person on social media wondering about her gender. In an attempt to evict McBride, he wrote: “I am confused. Are you a boy or a girl? “.
“I’m a senator,” McBride replied to the online troll.
In a Twitter post on Monday, he posted a screenshot of the conversation, along with the comment: “I hope it clears up.”
Her short reply is now going viral on the platform, and the 30-year-old has received a lot of support.
More than half a million have liked the post since Monday. Many are excited about McBride’s short and concise response on Twitter.
“This is perfection. Thank you senator,” writes one.
