It was on November 16 of last year when the President of the United States, Donald Trump, paid a visit to the Walter Reed Hospital. The White House explained that the president underwent a rapid routine review ahead of what they hoped would be “a busy 2020.” In hindsight, it turned out that the incident was more tense behind the closed doors of the White House, writes CNN.
The Vice President and the White House on Hold
CNN has gained access to New York Times reporter Michael Schmidt’s forthcoming book “Donald Trump v. United States: Inside the Fight to Detain a President.”
In connection with the book, Schmidt has been in contact with several White House employees.
“In the hours before the president went to the hospital, the vice president and the west wing of the White House were told to be vigilant,” Schmidt wrote in his book. The author has chosen to anonymize the source from which he received the information.
“The vice president had to be ready to temporarily assume the presidency,” Schmidt wrote according to CNN.
Didn’t follow protocol
Pence didn’t have to take over as president, but Schmidt says the need for emergency preparedness makes it natural to ask questions about the hospital visit. It turned out that protocol for a planned presidential visit was not followed. Walter Reed’s staff was not informed of the president’s arrival. Normally, the hospital should have been notified well in advance so that they can facilitate the need for increased security. This did not happen, which according to Schmidt indicates that there was no planned routine check.
He tweeted about the hospital visit.
The next day, Trump is said to have shared one. twitter message that the trip to the hospital was about visiting a patient.
“I visited the family of a wonderful young man who underwent major surgery at the wonderful Walter Reed Medical Center. They really are among the best doctors in the world. At the same time, I did parts of my annual health check and everything is fine. (Great!), “Trump wrote on Twitter on November 17.
CNN has been unable to obtain a response from the White House regarding the hospital visit.
