“It really did what it said it would do,” Amy Fazackerley, 49, told the BBC earlier this month.
He voted for Trump four years ago and will do the same now. Trump’s small business efforts are one of the biggest issues for Fazackerley, who runs a small business near Washington, DC.
Political analysts are partly right. The wall along the Mexican border is far from finished. But Trump has managed to deliver on several of his electoral promises.
– You have achieved a lot, says Associate Professor Alf Tomas Tønnessen to NTB.
New course
During the Trump presidency, tweets, conflicts, scandals and sensational statements have garnered a lot of attention.
At the same time, Trump has apparently worked determinedly with his political priorities, at least in some areas.
America’s foreign policy has changed dramatically, as has trade policy. Immigration policy has become much stricter, in line with what Trump promised before he was elected.
– The Supreme Court finally approved the latest version of Trump’s restrictions on the entry of several countries with a predominantly Muslim population, notes Tønnessen.
Foreign policy, trade, and immigration are areas in which Trump has chosen completely different solutions than previous Republican presidents.
In return, he has acted according to his own views on America’s trade and allies, views he has expressed in interviews dating back to the 1980s.
Trade war against China
As president, Donald Trump has put significant pressure on America’s allies in NATO. Behind the scenes, he is said to have threatened to withdraw the United States from the alliance if European countries fail to comply with American demands to spend more money on defense.
Trump has established new customs walls and renegotiated trade agreements, including with Canada and Mexico. It has waged a trade war against China, which it has designated as the main opponent of the United States in the international arena.
In many contexts, the president has been negative with international cooperation. It has withdrawn the United States from the agreement on Iran’s nuclear program and the INF agreement, which imposed restrictions on the nuclear arsenals of the United States and Russia.
In the midst of the corona pandemic, it also removed the United States from the World Health Organization (WHO).
– I don’t want war
At the same time, Trump has tried to keep his election promises to end the wars and bring American soldiers home from abroad. Unlike his predecessors, Trump has not helped start new wars or major armed conflicts.
– There is an advantage for Trump, he does not want war, says lead researcher Sverre Lodgaard of the Norwegian Institute of Foreign Policy (Nupi).
However, there are still US troops in Afghanistan, Iraq and Syria, even after the IS caliphate was crushed and despite Trump signing a peace deal with the Taliban. The conflict with Iran has escalated, although not in the form of war.
Conservative judges
A distinctive Trump case in which he has had mixed results is the wall against Mexico. Work is underway, but so far it’s mostly about building a bigger barrier where there were lower barriers before.
Plans for a major investment in new infrastructure in the United States have not materialized. So this promise is broken.
In many other areas, Trump advocates more traditional Republican policies. He has been given the opportunity to appoint three new conservative justices to the United States Supreme Court. They will be able to influence the interpretation of abortion, gun, healthcare and environmental laws for many years.
In addition, he has appointed a large number of conservative judges to important federal appeals courts.
Trump’s 2017 tax reform is also seen as a major victory. It meant tax cuts for both businesses and individuals.
Increase in deficit
While Republicans have previously been very concerned about reducing the state budget deficit, Trump has led them to ever larger deficits. Until the corona pandemic, the American economy was apparently good.
The Trump administration has removed a host of public regulations and regulations, including regulations intended to protect the environment. In addition, the president has withdrawn the United States from the Paris Agreement.
Opposition to environmental and climate measures has broad support in Trump’s party, which wants fewer restrictions on business.
Another strong desire of the party is to repeal the Obamacare health reform. So far, Trump has been unsuccessful.
In foreign policy, Trump has been even more pro-Israel than previous US presidents. In recent months, he has contributed to agreements that have improved relations between Israel and several Arab countries.
– it enriches
In the 2016 election campaign, Trump also promised to “drain the swamp” in Washington, fight corruption, and ban lobbying.
Critics of the president believe that development has gone in exactly the opposite direction at this point. Trump is accused of favoring family members, making money in the presidency and undermining the independence of the judiciary.
One of the world’s most famous political scientists, Francis Fukuyama, believes that the Trump administration is reminiscent of a mobster group that has taken control of the country.
“They want to use the government to enrich themselves and everyone they know and use the law against their enemies,” Fukuyama told the Sydney Morning Herald recently. Here he also described Trump as a threat to American democracy.
Alf Tomas Tønnessen is also very concerned about the consequences if Trump is re-elected. The pardon of Trump’s friends in the judiciary is something Tønnessen thinks we can see more of in that case.
At the same time, he believes that Trump would have had a very good chance of re-election if the crown pandemic had not affected the United States and the country’s economy.
