All consequences are removed

Twitter confirms that the 33 million followers of the account of the president of the United States will be eliminated shortly.

The decision applies to several large Twitter accounts, including @POTUS (President of the United States) and @FLOTUS (First Lady of the United States).

The removal will take place when Democrat Joe Biden takes control of the White House in place of Donald Trump on January 20, 2020.

The British Broadcasting Corporation BBC reports that Joe Biden’s employees have objected to Twitter’s decision, but that Twitter was not involved in the case.

Everyone who follows @POTUS today will have an automatic opportunity to join, but users must actively accept this, according to the BBC.

When Trump took office from Barack Obama in 2016, he got all the followers on the official presidential Twitter account in one go.

Not so this time: Joe Biden’s time as @POTUS begins with zero followers.

Biden’s personal Twitter account, which has close to 22 million followers, is of course unaffected by the removal. 2.6 million of these supporters have joined the ranks after Biden’s election victory in November.

At the same time, Donald Trump has lost 370,000 followers on his private Twitter account after it became clear that his days in the Oval Office are numbered.

Trump is said to have sent more than 50,000 Twitter messages during his four years as the most powerful man in the world.
