The plan is for the new association to produce and develop a value chain for green hydrogen and green ammonia in Norway.

The three companies say in a press release that the project may “become one of the largest climate initiatives in Norwegian industrial history.”

– This is not just a one-time climate project, but a strategic investment that can establish a new value chain for green hydrogen and green ammonia in Norway, which can create and secure jobs for the future, says Yara CEO , Svein Tore Holsether, in a comment.

It says their common goal is to establish the first large-scale European production of green ammonia.

Can eliminate large spills

Initially, the agreement involves a collaboration to electrify and decarbonize Yara’s ammonia production at Herøya in Porsgrunn. This can be achieved in five to seven years, if they have the necessary energy available and the authorities support the project.

The restructuring will be able to eliminate 800,000 tonnes of emissions annually and reduce Norway’s total emissions by more than 300,000 fossil cars, according to the companies.

“Rebuilding Yara’s existing ammonia plant is faster and cheaper than building a new one, but it will also require good framework conditions and support from the authorities to carry out this innovative project,” says Holsether.

Electrification of the plant in Herøya is expected to require large amounts of energy. Yara has previously stated to E24 that the need may be 500 megawatts. This means that it can consume up to 4.4 terawatt hours of energy per year. By comparison, consumption across Norway last year was 135 terawatt hours.

The three companies will also explore the potential of green ammonia production in northern Norway as an opportunity for future collaboration.

– The collaboration marks the beginning of a potential Norwegian industrial adventure in which Norway can play a key role in achieving international climate goals. The transition to renewable energy in Herøya may be a beacon project that can contribute to the restructuring of the Norwegian supplier industry to create the jobs of the future, says Aker CEO and Chairman of the Aker Horizons board, Øyvind Eriksen in a comment.

“Support Beam” for Aker Horizons Investment

Statkraft believes that the production of hydrogen and hydrogen fuel is in line with the strategic ambitions of the company.

– This project paves the way for new industrial development, while at the same time giving Norway’s major maritime industry a new competitive advantage, namely access to a large-scale, emission-free and efficient energy source, he says Statkraft CEO Christian Rynning Tønnesen.

According to the companies, the Herøya project could be one of the largest hydrogen projects in the world. This means that the supplier industry can gain experience that can form the basis of a new Norwegian export industry.

– The hydrogen project in Herøya could have important knock-on effects for the development of the entire hydrogen value chain in Norway, in addition to other supplier companies, in the same way that the Ekofisk field was for the Norwegian oil industry and gas in the 1970s. says Eriksen in Aker.

He explains that the project will be a “pillar” for Aker Horizon’s investment in hydrogen through the Aker Clean Hydrogen company.
