Abuse in sport | Here’s how they want to teach kindergarten kids about sexual abuse:

Save the Children’s top Monica Sydgård believes the new initiative is about child safety. He is bothered by the amount of abuse that occurs in Norway every year.

OSLO (Nettavisen): – What has impressed me the most is how many children in Norway have been victims of sexual abuse and violence in Norway. It has made a great impression, Sydgård tells Nettavisen.

She is the leader of the Save the Children Norway program and for several years has focused on countering abuse against Norwegian children and youth.

– Much bigger problem than people think

According to Statistics Norway (SSB), in 2018, the last year they have complete statistics, there were 115 convictions for rape of minors under 14 years old.

In addition, five people were convicted grove rapes of children under 14 years of age.

The 2019 UEVO survey, a national survey of youth ages 12 to 16, shows that six percent have experienced sexual abuse by an adult.

In Nettavisen’s sports article series on abuse by shop stewards in sport, it also appears that the 2019 Public Health Report states that 1 in 5 girls and 1 in 14 boys claim to have suffered sexual abuse as children and adolescence.

– Abuse and violence is a much bigger social problem in Norway than many believe. We also absolutely believe that there are dark numbers here. We know there are kids who don’t count, even in safe surveys, says Sydgård.

Now she claims that Save the Children works to help children learn about sexual abuse already in kindergarten.

In this way, you hope that children are better equipped to tell when something happens.

Show graphic movies for kindergarten children.

When it comes to exactly how kindergarten children should learn about sexual abuse at such a young age, Save the Children has launched a new “My Body, What I Own” movie talk show to use in the kindergarten.

“I Own My Body” is an animated television series that will teach children about the body, boundaries, and sexual abuse.

See clips at the top of the box.

The goal of the series is for more children to dare to report abuse and for all children to learn about limits, both their own and others.

Previously, films were only used in primary school, but now they are also used by Norwegian kindergartens.

– Show the children what is law and what is not. It also comes with a teaching plan that has already been used in school for a while, but then we have adapted a version that will be offered to kindergartens this fall, says Sydgård.

The movies are occasionally graphic and do not hide genitalia or acts of abuse. In one of the movies, a narrator’s voice says the following:

“If Phil’s coach says, ‘You’re the best and kindest in the world when you pee me, and no one has told Phil that what the coach wants is actually off-limits to adults, then it’s not easy for Phil to know. that I don’t need to do it, and that he doesn’t do it either.

– There are quite graphic animations here, where genitals and such are not hidden. What is the idea behind being as direct as you are in a movie that will be shown to children up to kindergarten age?

– Save the Children believes that it is important to be concrete and direct when talking to children about the body, limits and abuse. We adults have a habit of walking around porridge when we talk about topics that are unpleasant to ourselves, or that are unusual to talk about, Silje Vold tells Nettavisen.

She is a special advisor on violence and sexual abuse at Save the Children, and she believes this is exactly what they want to change with “My body, I own it.”

– Because children need clear, simple and concrete information to understand the message. For children to understand what abuse is, that it is never their fault, and how they can get help, we adults must dare to be clear. It’s also important that children who have been abused can recognize themselves, Vold says.

– Movies work well

She says that when the movies were made in 2017, the target group was basically children between the ages of 6 and 8.

– But in the time since then, we’ve gotten a lot of feedback from kindergartens who wanted to use the movies, or had already started doing so, he says.

Therefore, Save the Children has collaborated with various kindergartens across the country to test how movies worked with this target group, and has collaborated with kindergartens on an age-appropriate talk and educational program for 4 to 6 years.

– We have received clear feedback from kindergartens that the films worked well for the target group, he says.

– Have you had any negative reaction to the fact that the films are too graphic?

– We have received overwhelmingly positive comments from both children and adults about the films, teaching materials for schools and this new talk show for kindergarten. It is repeated in the comments that they appreciate that the movies are graphic, because they are easy for children to understand and provide a good starting point for a later conversation. At the same time, they are not brutal or scary, but instead are made in a light and kid-friendly tone, he says.

Kindergartens have demanded it

Violence claims that since the plan was launched in September, more than 800 copies have been ordered and shipped to kindergartens and health centers across the country. In addition, the material has been downloaded more than 300 times.

This autumn, it was possible to order or download the program for free in all kindergartens in Norway.

Monica Sydgård is prepared for the fact that there can be reactions along the way that kindergarten-age children learn about these things.

– It sounds early, but some people experience sexual abuse that early. It is not about scaring children, but about protecting them. They will learn about the body and limits, what is the law and what is not, he says.

– What kind of reactions do you get from your parents or other people when you express a wish for this?

– Some have been concerned that this scares children, but it turns out that it protects them rather. It’s about knowledge. If it happens at home, children often think that “this is how it should be.” Children themselves need to know what violence and abuse is, and how they can get help if exposed. Kindergarten staff tell us that this is an incredibly good tool, says Sydgård.

Trygve notified the NFF of the judges’ sexual approaches, but the man was allowed to continue judging. The judge is now accused of having sex with children

She believes that children who have received education or other information about violence and abuse understand better that this is wrong and are easier to tell about their experiences than children who have not received this knowledge.

Children should know that it is never their fault if they are exposed and that they have the right to speak up and get help, is the mantra.

According to Sydgård, the program has been developed at the request of many kindergartens who have requested an adapted version of the teaching program they have created for schools.

– We have worked closely with kindergartens across the country during its development. It is the kindergartens themselves that carry out the pedagogical scheme. It is up to the kindergarten to decide who will participate and lead the meeting in the kindergarten, he says.

Spiral: – Naturally, parents can be skeptical

The experience of kindergarteners who have tried this conversational approach shows that it is a great advantage for children to have talked about emotions, the body, and sexuality before learning about sexual abuse.

Therefore, he points out that it is important for kindergartens to do things in the correct order.

– Facilitates conversations about the content of the movies, and gives children more “pegs” to understand and reflect on the content of “My body is mine.” Therefore, we recommend that kindergartens make a plan of how and in what order they want to address these issues in kindergarten, at different age levels, throughout the year and in monthly thematic plans, he says.

In Speyer, one of the largest private nursery chains in Norway, they have a positive opinion about the Save the Children initiative. Subject and Quality Director Pia Paulsrud says it is important that kindergartens also help prevent sexual abuse.

– But we believe that “education about sexual abuse” is a regrettable expression. We believe more in empowering children to set their own limits, in respecting the limits of others, and in getting to know and feel safe with their own bodies, Paulsrud tells Nettavisen.

She says Espira already addresses this in the master plan, and that they have guidelines for working systematically with the master plan.

– How do you think parents and guardians will receive this training?

– It is natural for parents to become skeptical if “sexual abuse training” is included in the weekly program. We believe that good information from the kindergarten about what you work with and how you work will create good parent cooperation and a good understanding of kindergarten priorities, she says.

– Everyone has to think about it

The online newspaper series of articles is primarily about abuse in sports. Sydgård believes that it is very important to be aware of the dangers and to increase awareness about sexual abuse in this area as well.

– The abuse does not have to have occurred in connection with the sport, but everyone who works or is affiliated with a sports club should think about the fact that they may have children in training who have been subjected to sexual violence or abuse, and that they can be a safe adult for. Sport reflects our society, and in sport it is the adults who are with the children. As in all other situations, one should make sure the sports club is safe for children and that adults know what to do if they are worried about a child, says Sydgård.
