A place where many people forget to think about the danger of infection

The corona pandemic has changed a lot. Many of us, among other things, have bought a bandage for the first time and have used it when we have traveled abroad, among many others.

There is a completely different approach to cleaning and sanitizing than a few months ago. However, there are still some areas that many may not think about in this regard.

One of them is the car. Norwegian cars are rarely washed inside, a new survey shows.

Half of the car fleet has to settle for interior cleaning every six months or even less often. It shows a survey conducted by YouGov, for the Automotive Industry Suppliers Association (ABL).

16 percent say the car is only washed inside once a year. Three percent admit it never happens.

Few do it every month

– The cabin of the car is actually a room in which many people spend a lot of time. Therefore, it should be cleaned as routinely as when we use the cloth at home. At a time of high risk of virus infection, this has become even more important than before, says Arild Hansen, ABL general manager.

Just over a third of those surveyed wash the interior of the car two or three times in six months. 30 percent dial every six months.

Only 15 percent do it at least once a month.

Complete disinfection

– Habits have hardly changed since we asked consumers the same question seven years ago. We were probably expecting some improvement now, especially since we’re all very concerned about virus control, Hansen says, in a press release.

He notes that a large selection of car care products has made interior cleaning much easier than before, at the same time that there are a host of professional suppliers.

Now a method for the complete disinfection of the passenger compartment is also being implemented.

Wear protective gear

– Some workshops are testing this now. We expect the service to be widely available within a few weeks, says Tom Roger Hammer, CEO of Billakkspesialisten AS, which in collaboration with the British developer company will offer the technology to Norwegian industry players.

The process requires some technical equipment and access to compressed air. Work with disinfection also presupposes the use of protective equipment. Therefore, it is intended that in principle it is the car repair shops that can carry out the disinfection.

– The treatment only lasts about three minutes and the car is ready for use after another five minutes of operation. The manufacturer promises that the method is very effective, killing 99.99 percent of all viruses and bacteria, including Covid-19, says Hammer.

The air conditioning also needs cleaning from time to time, this is noted, among other things, by the fact that over time it can become a painful and “trapped” smell in the car.

New and unknown

He estimates that the treatment will cost a few hundred dollars.

In the ABL survey, 20 percent say they are quite or very likely to use the service. Two-thirds answer that it is unlikely or highly unlikely. 13 percent dial not to know.

– Moderation should probably be seen in light of the fact that this is new and unfamiliar to most people. But the risk of virus infection is something we have to live with for a long time, so eventually we will see that many will use both this and other similar services, says Arild Hansen.
