A leading messenger of dangerous conspiracy theories
President Donald Trump calls critical journalism fake news. He himself is a prominent messenger of dangerous and false conspiracy theories.
This is a leader. The leader expresses the attitude of VG. The political editor of VG is responsible for the leader.
In a lengthy interview with Laura Ingraham on Fox TV earlier this week, Trump made a series of accusations that are as surprising as they are unfounded. Trump spoke of an airliner that was almost fully loaded with “thugs in black uniforms and a lot of equipment.”
They were reportedly heading from an unknown location to disrupt the Republican National Convention. Trump declared that Joe Biden, the Democratic presidential candidate, is “ruled by people he has never heard of, people who are in the dark shadow.” In addition, there are some “very stupid rich men” that the president believes are paying for demonstrations in American cities.

The White House makes no attempt to document these or other sensational accusations by the president. Similar conspiracy theories have been circulating for some time in various online forums. Trump’s intention is obviously to blacken Joe Biden and intimidate voters with the threat posed by “radical Democrats.”
Obviously, it has also become important to discredit the Black Lives Matter movement, which organizes demonstrations against racism. Spreading conspiracy theories is not a new strategy on Trump’s part. Long before he was elected president, he launched a false theory that Barack Obama was not born in the United States and therefore became president illegally.

Trump’s remarks to Fox come at the same time as news reports that a Russian group, which was known for its participation in the 2016 US presidential election, is again trying to influence the election campaign through a fake account network on the internet. Facebook has removed many profiles on a network that they believe was created to destabilize the presidential elections. For several months, US intelligence services have warned that Russia and other countries will try to influence the elections by spreading conspiracy theories and then division.

It is even more regrettable that the president contributes by spreading ominous theories. American society is already deeply divided. The development is tragic and terrifying. In many cases, peaceful demonstrations against racism have been followed by arson and vandalism. Right-wing armed groups act as self-proclaimed civil protection.
American voters deserve a factual debate between parties and candidates about the important options facing the country. The last thing they need are scary images and conspiracy theories.
