After three months in Alaska, dog runner Thomas Wærner (47) finally returns to Norway. It happens with a 63-year-old plane, according to a press release.
Thomas Wærner has been in Alaska since mid-February, and on March 18 he became the third Norwegian in history to succeed in the legendary Iditarod dog sled race. The race is 1450 kilometers long and runs from Anchorage to Nome, where Wærner has been sitting coronafast ever since.
At the end of May he returns home. This is reported by Nils Marius Otterstad in a press release. He has had a lot of contact with Wærner and is the project manager of the international dog racing series.
– He is greatly relieved and hopes to return home, says his wife Guro Byfuglien Wærner to VG.
He was present at the beginning of Iditarod, but left home early because he was afraid to sit down quickly.
A collaboration between Aker BioMarine and the Solo Flight History Museum now ensures that Thomas Wærner and all of the winning dogs return home on a veteran 1957 to 1957 Braathen Safe DC-6 aircraft, according to the press release. The plane has been parked in Alaska for a few years, but now they have replaced some windows and parts that prepare it for its last trip to Stavanger airport.

After that, the final stage awaits from Stavanger to the north of Torpa, where wife and children Alba (8), Alvar (6) and Frida (3) are waiting.
– I’ve been a single mom for three months, so it’s going to be pretty good, says Guro Byfuglien Wærner.
Thomas Wærner also has two children from a previous marriage.
In one year, Wærner has become the best dog runner in the world with victory in the main classics; Femundløpet, Finnmarksløpet and now Iditarod. No one has clearly accomplished that.
