At the same time that the Norwegian Sports Federation (NIF) has adopted electronic sports, the electronic sports federation chooses to sign a controversial $ 1 million deal with a foreign gaming company.
Former sports president Tom Tvedt flirted with Norway’s e-sports environment two years ago. Since that time, the parties have met several times without great love flourishing.
At the same time, more and more people have talked about electronic sports as a possible Olympic branch.
Now, however, there is a complete rift between parts of the computer gaming and traditional sports environment:
The Comeon gaming company participates with millions of annual support for the new federation, which gathered the troops and reestablished last fall.
– We would like to cooperate with NIF, but they have closed the door. So we had to do something to raise enough funds to develop our own organization and recruit people. Although we have been operating on a daily basis, we are working for international organizations that have a hundred employees, says the Secretary General of the esports association Jack Holand to VG.
According to Holand, the core of the battle is what kind of computer games traditional sports can accept: FIFA’s soccer game gets the green light and is also led by the Norwegian Soccer Association. But shooters like Fortnite and Counter Strike have elements of violence that the IOC will not accept.

Most eSports players, according to the association, prefer this type of game.
NIF sports policy spokesman Per Tøien believes Holand is not hurt at best. He believes that the process of the sports federation has been on issues completely different from the type of games that will be included, and that the NIF has not closed the door to electronic sports.
The clothing emphasizes that the Sports Board has been positive that sports teams across the country can start eSports groups regardless of the type of games offered. Two sports circles have assisted the eSports association with the process towards possible membership in the Norwegian Sports Federation.
If the association wants to be admitted as a special union in the NIF, it can be done in the sports council no later than 2021. Then, a set of criteria must be met. The electronic sports federation would also have to accept specific rules on anti-doping, martial arts and Norwegian sports regulations for children.
– The Sports Board has not considered whether the electronic sports association should be included as a special association. Tøien tells VG that such decisions must be made by the sports council.
Holand emphasizes that the esports association will comply with Norwegian law, which prohibits the marketing of foreign gaming companies targeting Norwegian customers. At the same time, it acknowledges that an advertising ban is probably impossible to enforce on an internet streaming service, and that the gaming industry contradicts the advertising ban and refers to the EEA agreement.
– What do you have to return for this money?
– We have to profile Comeon as the main sponsor. We are on digital platforms, therefore, this company is a natural partner. In the industry, we are closely related, says Holand.
He doesn’t want to comment on individual sums, but says the new deal is “a few million a year.”

At NIF, you are very skeptical about connecting with the foreign betting industry. It is not compatible with the work of the sports association.
– 96 percent of all young boys and a large proportion of girls are engaged in games, and many of them are also engaged in electronic sports. If organizations offering activities for children and young people are associated with a cynical industry like the gaming industry, ask Per Tøien.
