– Did it come from a virus laboratory in Wuhan, did it occur in a wet market in Wuhan, or did it originate elsewhere? The answer to that is we don’t know, Milley said at a news conference Tuesday, quoted by CNN.
According to the defense chief, most of the evidence shows that the virus originated naturally and was not created by man.
He notes that so far there is no “conclusive evidence” in the case, but that the overall picture of the evidence suggests that “it was probably not intentional.”
Milley adds that the case is still under investigation.
“Great evidence”
The defense chief’s statements contrast with what Foreign Minister Mike Pompeo said late last week. During a television interview on Saturday, he said there was “great evidence” that the corona virus came from a Chinese laboratory.
He didn’t say anything about the type of evidence. The United States has also presented no evidence to the WHO.
Pompeo strongly criticized China in the interview, but did not respond if he believed that the coronavirus had been intentionally spread.
President Donald Trump also claimed that the virus comes from a laboratory in Wuhan.
– Not man-made
Last week, US intelligence concluded that the virus is not man-made.
– The intelligence community joins the broad scientific consensus that the covid-19 virus is neither man-made nor genetically modified, a statement said.
The laboratory in question, the Wuhan Institute of Virology, is subject to the Chinese Academy of Sciences and has, among other things, conducted research on the SARS virus and other viruses that can be transmitted from animals to humans.
Chinese authorities have rejected all claims that the virus outbreak originated here.
