Auto sales, the crown crisis | Substantial decline in car sales, but one type of car is increasing

No, they are not electric cars …

The Korona crisis is also feeling very well in the car industry. Auto factories around the world have stopped and car sales have also dropped dramatically.

Recent April registration numbers show that new car sales here in Norway decreased by 34 percent compared to the same month last year. So far this year, new car sales are 20 percent lower than in the same period in 2019.

While new car sales in April saw a noticeable decline in both gasoline, diesel, and electric cars, sales of rechargeable hybrids increased. And despite declining car sales: The market share of rechargeable hybrids and electric cars has never been so high, and now stands at 70 percent.

Power will continue to increase

– The fact that car sales fell in April shows a clear effect of less activity on the Norwegian economy. The crown situation may be one of the causes. At the same time, the month of Easter is usually somewhat unstable because it is a week and a half without records, says Øyvind Solberg Thorsen, director of the Road Traffic Information Council (OFV).

And although electric car sales have also fallen in April, a month of great financial challenges for many, the trend is clear:

– The market share of electric cars and rechargeable hybrids has never been so high. This clearly shows that the flow of rechargeable electric and hybrid cars will continue to increase, and that the transition to new technologies will influence car sales in the future, Thorsen says in a press release.

New car sales in April also show that the decline was the lowest for electric cars.

Many more to choose from

The increase in sales of rechargeable hybrids is probably due to the fact that a number of new models have entered this class. The cars also have a significantly longer range than that of the first generation of rechargeable hybrids.

Several of the premium brands have created new, rechargeable SUVs that go a long way. Also, there are more popular alternatives like the Volvo XC40 and the Ford Kuga. Relatively compact SUVs with good electric range.

– We should also bear in mind that although in April 2019 there were 30 models of rechargeable hybrids to choose from, the number in April of this year was 47. And when the selection of this type of car increases so much, and many want that type automobile, it is also natural that sales and the number of registrations increase, says Øyvind Solberg Thorsen.

Previous car rental

Also in the used car registry, there are clear changes for rechargeable hybrids:

– When we also see that the increase in ownership change is greater for this group of cars, it shows that the rechargeable hybrid with good range is something that many want, says Thorsen.

It also notes that the increase in the number of rechargeable hybrids at the change of ownership may be due to the fact that many rechargeable hybrids were old lease cars that have acquired a new owner after the end of the lease period.

No one has ever been afraid to buy the “wrong” car
