EU flag on half stick in Luxembourg

Among other things, the flag has been lowered in Schengen and Grevenmacher. It is also marked in half a bar across the border in several German border cities, writes the Luxembourg Times.

The mayors of various cities believe that closed borders violate the Schengen agreement on free movement.

On the Facebook page of the Schengen municipality, they state that the flag will be at half a bar until Europe Day on May 9.

Closed since March

In mid-March, Germany closed the borders to Luxembourg, Austria, Denmark, France and Switzerland, but not to Belgium and the Netherlands.

Luxembourg Foreign Minister Jean Asselborn has repeatedly called for free movement across borders, but Germany’s interior minister Horst Seehofer said last week that the border closure may last until 15 of May.

– Disasters

The CSV Christian Democratic Party, the largest opposition party, calls border controls “a disaster for Greater Luxembourg” and says that the rigorous and excessive application of the law “could jeopardize decades of European friendship,” writes LT.

On the other hand, the pirate party in the country believes that it is important to be united, not to protest, in these times.

– The European spirit must be maintained during the crown crisis instead of resorting to ambiguous actions that can lead to possible misunderstandings, they say in a statement to the German version of the newspaper.

They note that decisions to close the borders were made at the national level, not by the EU.
