Russia has the fastest increase in crown infection in Europe. “The Russian health system is under enormous pressure at the moment,” said an expert from Russia.
Russia is becoming one of the most crown-infected countries in the world. On Sunday, Russian health authorities announced that they had registered 10,633 new infected in the past 24 hours.
It is the largest one-day increase in Russia so far, bringing the total number of infected registered in Russia to 134,687. The country is now number seven on the list of most infected states, behind China, Turkey and Iran.
58 people died of covid-19 in Russia on the last day. A total of 1280 people in Russia have died as a result of the disease.
On Thursday, it was announced that Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Misjustin was infected with the corona virus. The Prime Minister has now isolated himself so as not to infect others.
Worst Moscow
In early March, when the crown pandemic was about to break Italy’s healthcare system, and the rest of Europe was preparing to shut down society to prevent infection, Russia was officially almost virus-free.
Russia closed the border with China, where the virus was first detected, as early as January 30, but waited a long time for other measures. However, during March, infection rates rose rapidly, and by the end of the month, authorities took steps to limit the spread of the virus.
Moscow is particularly hit by the pandemic. Mayor Sergei Sobjanin says that, according to The Moscow Times, two percent of the city’s residents are infected. In that case, there are 250,000 people.
Moscow has also imposed some of the strictest restrictions in Russia. Inhabitants of the capital are only allowed to leave their homes to ventilate dogs, throw litter, and visit the nearest store. In addition, temporary field hospitals have been established around Moscow to treat patients with covid-19.
Health care under pressure
At the same time that the pandemic is hitting Russia, the country’s health system is in bad shape. Inna Sangadzhieva, senior advisor to the Helsinki Committees, tells VG that Anastasia Vasilieva, director of the Russian medical union, describes what is happening today in Russian hospitals as hell. Vasilieva herself was physically attacked a few weeks ago after she openly criticized the state of medical care.
– The Russian health system is under enormous pressure at the moment. Like a few weeks ago in Italy and the United States, doctors and nurses take the lead to care for large numbers of patients, Sangadzhieva writes in an email to VG.
Unlike most European countries, Russia has not introduced national austerity measures, but went to each region to decide what type of measures to take.
According to Sangadzhieva, the main problem now is that medical personnel lack protective equipment, technical equipment and medicines.
– Russian health care has been underfunded and has not been prioritized in budgets. Many hospitals have been closed or closed. The buildings are worn and will not be renovated. Many buildings in the regions lack basic services such as clean water, electricity and toilets, he writes.
