The drug Remdesivir, which is the hope of the crown of the United States, shows promising results, but Norwegian researchers believe it needs more research.

On Friday, the experimental drug was urgently approved in the United States, as announced by President Donald Trump. On Monday, 1.5 million ampoules of Remdesivir will be distributed to hospitals on Monday, according to Vice President Mike Pence.

This was done based on preliminary results from a study supported by the United States.

It shows that Remdesivir, from the pharmaceutical company Gilead Sciences, reduces the course of the disease by 31 percent, or an average of four days, for patients with covid-19 in hospitals.

“It is positive that we are getting promising results, but it is too early to conclude that we now have a treatment that works against the coronavirus,” says CEO John-Arne Røttingen of the Research Council.

– too early to conclude

It’s interesting that we get positive results, but we need more research, says Røtttingen, along with professor at Oslo University Hospital Pål Aukrust, in a Research Council press release.

– Various medications are currently being tested in studies around the world. The same day these results arrived, another smaller study showed no effect of Remdesivir, says Røttingen.

On Wednesday, another study was published in the acclaimed journal The Lancet, conducted by China-Japan Friendship Hospital and Capital Medical University in China. The study concludes that it is «no significant clinical benefit»With the use of Remdesivir for the treatment of patients with a crown.

Tested in Norwegian hospitals

To obtain certain knowledge, we need to do enough or big enough studies.

“This is just what we can say if the drug really works against coronavirus and if it can have unexpected side effects,” says Røttingen, who leads the WHO’s global Solidarity study.

The drug is now being tested against the virus in Norwegian hospitals.

– For us, it is important to emphasize that it is not the case that we have now found treatment for the coronavirus, says Professor Pål Aukrust at the University Hospital of Oslo.

They must continue to collect data, explains Aukrust.

– Both in this medicine and in the other treatments we are investigating, before we can conclude which treatment really works.

Formerly Ebola medicine

Remdesivir is really an Ebola medicine. In labs, the drug showed promising results, and thus quickly spread to the areas most affected by Ebola in Africa.

However, in 2019, Congolese health authorities reported that the drug was less effective than so-called monoclonal antibody drugs, which are often used to treat cancer, writes The Guardian.

Remdesivir became relevant again when the corona virus broke out. The drug has been shown to be effective in preventing Respiratory Syndrome (Mers-CoV) and Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (Sars), which is also caused by the coronavirus. This is based on animal studies.

However, some studies indicate that the mortality rate is increasing with the use of this medicine and, according to NTB, no definitive conclusions have been reached on its effectiveness.
