For a time it was feared that Sunday’s joint starts in Östersund would have to be canceled due to strong winds in the Swedish winter metropolis. But even though the wind was heard well through the TV screen and the gusts were measured up to 17 seconds meters, the gutters were only exposed.
The weather violently affected the race and it was boom after boom for the biathletes. But Ingrid Tandrevold coped better and took the first world champion of her career.
Despite the five obstacles, Tandrevold was able to decide the race with a jerk on the last lap. It was his first victory after nine World Cup podium finishes so far in his career.
– It feels absolutely fantastic and completely raw. Today I just had to run “pretend until you make it”. Yesterday I lost all confidence in shooting into the wind. Lubricator Tobias said today that “shit yesterday, today you can win.” When I felt like I had such good skis, I thought I just had to go see if it worked, says pure radiant and smooth Tandrevold to NRK after the race.
Broke the barrier
She says it has been a long emotional road to her first World Cup victory.
– I do not know what to say. I can only say that it is incredibly exhausting to relate to oneself because I would like to be more stable. It’s exhausting being so up and down, but luckily I have a goldfish memory and put up with something new every time, the Fossum girl smiles at NRK.
The victory also meant that Tandrevold won the joint start cup overall.
– I know, I don’t understand anything. I didn’t know it was possible. I hadn’t looked at it at all, she tells NRK a bit confused.
The closing of the World Cup is postponed
– a parody
The wind was absolutely decisive and affected all the shootings. When the women entered for the first shot, the wind sails were out. It presented challenges for several of the runners and both Marte Olsbu Røiseland and Tiril Eckhoff had two rounds in the penalty shootout rounds.
In the second shootout, the wind was so strong that NRK commentator Andreas Stabrun Smith felt himself swaying in the stadium commentary box.
The wind also carried Tiril Eckhoff, who shot three new arms into the strong wind. Ingrid Tandrevold, who stopped with a single boom after the two horizontal shots, shot much better.
– This is almost a parody, Stabrun Smith commented as runner after runner missed the third shot.
As the six leading girls stood on the stage, there were so many red flashes on the records that they were more reminiscent of a dingy disco than of the Östersund shooting range.
Tandrevold, who was Norway’s best before the first heat on his feet, had to start on three rounds of penalties and came out 40 seconds behind leader Alimbekeva.
– horrible
Eckhoff coped with a single boom and climbed the charts, and was in the firing line for a podium spot before the final decisive shot.
– It’s hard, it’s very difficult, Ola Lunde commented when leader Alimbekeva shot three arms in the last series.
– These are terribly harsh conditions. Now it stops for everyone, he continued as Ingrid Tandrevold lowered the flashes.
The Fossum girl managed with a single boom and came out as number two shots, with just five seconds left.
Those seconds ate up to zero commas. Meanwhile, on the slopes, she moved from Alimbekeva and secured the first World Cup winner of her career.
