Fukushima province was hit hardest by the triple disaster nearly ten years ago, when an earthquake, tsunami and nuclear disaster occurred simultaneously in March 2011.
At that time, Japan was hit by a powerful earthquake and subsequent tsunami. It brought down the cooling systems of three of the six reactors at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant on the country’s northeast coast, and all three reactor cores melted.
This caused the release of large amounts of radioactive radiation. Since then, the debate about nuclear energy in the country has intensified.
