Halvor Egner Granerud (24) fought in ski jumping last year and “lived by a saving flame.” On Saturday he achieved his ninth World Cup victory of the season and the good season has led to a much thicker wallet.
– Night and day.
Halvor Egner Granerud tells VG about the differences in financial situation from last season to this one during a digital press conference after Saturday’s victory.
The financial rebound is welcome for Granerud, who has previously talked about how he emptied his savings account last year and who this summer also worked as a call-in kindergarten substitute.
– Last year I lived from the savings account and this year there is a lot of traffic from the checking account to the savings account. There is a big difference. The biggest difference is that I don’t have to take into account financial considerations when, for example, I’m at the grocery store or I have to consider whether I should do something that I want to do, Egner Granerud tells VG.

In the World Cup, this season it has raised 173,000 Swiss francs, which is equivalent to 1,641,425 Norwegian crowns. Last season, for comparison, he jumped to 800 Swiss francs (7,590 Norwegian crowns) at the World Cup.
– Last year I lived in a fuel burner. It was always about living as cheaply as possible, he says.
So far he has not been carried away by money.
– I bought wool clothes when I was in Lahti and we had to move on. Then I bought wool underwear, briefs and socks for 2500. Then I felt pretty bad. That’s what I’ve spent my money on so far, he says with a smile.

The Norwegian believes that money can have both a positive and a negative effect on the way forward.
– I have more peace, but at the same time it is easy to be comfortable.
– I have not had that much money in the bank before, but I think a good start is to be aware that it can be a challenge, says Granerud.
Granerud has spoken in recent weeks that he has more or less taken a new step. It has resulted in three top wins in the last three races, plus he nearly won with a crash at Lahti.
– It is very worth knowing that if I bring out my best mares, I can be ten points better than the next best mare in exactly the same conditions. It gives a lot of self-confidence, says Granerud.

With nine World Cup victories, he has already surpassed Roar Ljøkelsøy’s previous Norwegian men’s record of seven World Cup victories in one season. Maren Lundby holds the Norwegian record with twelve wins, while Petr Prevc in the 2015/16 season won up to 15 World Cup races.
– It’s possible. There are ten races left. I think it will take a lot. Two of the ten races are in Zakopane, where things did not go so well earlier this winter. I would be very surprised if I can keep up with the close fight there. So you’re in eight races and six wins in eight races sounds a bit of a stretch, says Granerud of the record hunt.
– I’ve taken a look at that top five list and I’ve seen that if you get eleven wins, you’re in the top five. The goal should be to first reach two digits and then eleven if I reach ten. Take one win at a time.
