Korona, Steinar Madsen | Sensational study on possible corona medicine

Claimed to be 100 times more effective than the drug used today

There are not many drugs that have been shown to have a particularly strong effect against COVID-19. One of the few approved drugs is remdesivir, an antiviral drug originally made for Ebola.

But that does not mean that the case is not being worked on. On Monday, the leading journal Science published a research article in which renowned researchers analyzed the effects of an unknown drug called Plitidepsin.

The latest from Saturday’s press conference: More relays, but three municipalities receive stricter measures: – We must avoid this now

The article in Spanish has received attention

The study is based on laboratory experiments and is written in highly inaccessible professional language. Many, however, have noticed this in an article in the important Spanish newspaper El País.

They have published an article in English in which they have taken a closer look at the study. It has come as a tip from several Nettavisen readers in the last few days:

– The antiviral drug manufactured in Spain is 100 times more powerful than the current coronavirus treatment, the newspaper writes in its title.

It prevents the virus from getting help from the body.

The drug does not attack the virus itself, but makes it difficult for the virus to multiply. Viruses use the body’s own machinery to multiply and are completely dependent on the body doing its job.

The drug blocks a protein in the body called eEFA1 that the virus needs to multiply.

According to El País, the drug has already been used experimentally in humans, with what is described as promising results. The Science report is the first to really delve into the subject.

They describe the drug as 27.5 times more potent than remdesivir and conclude as follows:

– We demonstrate that efficiency to plitidepsin treatment in mice with coronary infection gives a reduction in viral replication that is approximately one hundred times greater (“two orders of magnitude”, journal.anm) with the help of preventive treatment, the researchers write in their article.

This means that the amount of virus is reduced by up to 99 percent.

– Our results indicate that plitidepsin is a promising therapeutic candidate for COVID-19.

Steinar Madsen: – I’m not sure if this will work

Medical Director Steinar Madsen knows the research, but is only a limited optimist:

– This is based on laboratory experiments and it is not known if it will work in the body. There are countless substances that have been tested in this way and have been shown not to work when tested. Some give too many side effects, others don’t work at all, Madsen tells Nettavisen.

The Science article indicates that significant weight loss in mice was a consequence, at least at high doses.

– So before there are experiments on humans, basically nothing can be said for sure. But this kind of experiment is of course important when it comes to finding substances that you can do more research on, Madsen says.
