The phenomenon occurs when there are less degrees somewhere, but more degrees higher up in the atmosphere. Then the precipitation falls as rain, then the rain freezes as soon as it hits the ground. So it can be very slippery and slide like a mirror.

– If it starts to rain on bare asphalt, it could form a glazed surface, explains meteorologist Jon Austerheim at the Meteorological Institute.

– Now there are many degrees below zero in many places, and there will be many clouds and precipitation that will fall as rain, he says. Then there is the possibility of freezing rain in some parts of the country, mainly in Agder and Telemark.

Dangerous for traffic

Due to the danger of slippery roads, meteorologist Austerheim recommends checking Veivesenet’s traffic reports before leaving on Saturday.

– And it should be reluctant if it needs to come out if it freezes, he adds.

The Norwegian Meteorological Institute has also issued a warning on its own channels.

– Stay tuned for the tough driving conditions tomorrow Saturday, there will be snow turning to rain in the lowlands, they write on Twitter on the first day of Christmas.

Freezing rain can hang from trees and power lines in some parts of the world and break them for a longer period of time, Austerheim explains to VG. They are rare here in Norway, but occur much more frequently on the east coast of North America.

More warning signs

At the same time, freezing rain and slippery roads are far from the only danger warning the Meteorological Institute has sent out for space Christmas. A hazard warning was also issued for large amounts of snow in the north of the country and a violent storm in eastern Norway.

– The storm in eastern Norway is the most serious in the first place. Bad weather comes from the southeast and then this part of the country is more exposed, says Austerheim.

Additionally, strong gust warnings have been issued north of Saltfjellet in Nordland and south of Troms. It also warns against snowdrifts in Troms and Nordland.

Also, orange flood hazard is reported for Akerselva in Oslo, and at Sunnmøre there is an ongoing orange level for avalanche hazard.
