Gylfi Sigurdsson tried a shot, but from an awkward position, sending the ball to the visiting fans.
Teams struggled to score even after the break, but then it was Edinson Cavani who made sure Manchester United reached the semi-finals.
– In the second half, I think we dominated, says Solskjær.
There they can face Brentford, Manchester City or Tottenham.
