When the Norwegian handball girls celebrated the European Championship gold on the podium after the final victory over France, Camilla Herrem could be seen clearly excited. At the press conference, they asked him why he was shedding tears.
– I will try not to cry, but it will be difficult, was the immediate response of the 34-year-old man.
Only after some encouragement and a pat on the back from coach Thorir Hergeirsson did Herrem manage to continue.
– It was because my father passed away two years ago. He has been with me in all the championships I have been to, so I only thought of him, and that he would be very proud of me and of us, said a crying Lord.
Herrem’s father closely followed his daughter’s struggles and was known to be an avid supporter of Camilla.
– That was what I thought about, so I got a little excited. After 28 days, it was time to get him out, so the bubble just burst, explained Herrem, who was eliminated from EC’s star team before the final.
Open on pain and longing
Herrem has been open multiple times about how his father Carl Otto passed away as a result of cardiac arrest. He has also spoken openly about how he copes with pain and missed perhaps his most important support.
Three months after his father’s death, he recounted how he manages to miss his father.
This is how Camilla Herrem faces her father’s longing
– Before games, I always had to see where mom and dad sat. Now it’s like closing my eyes and thinking about him, she told TV 2 at the time.
– It’s tough, but fortunately I have so many good friends here in the national team with whom I can talk a lot. I think it is also important to talk about that. Because if you can’t talk about it, I think too much all the time so it just spills out. So I am very happy for the support I have here, Herrem said about the role of the national team in all this.
