Erling Braut Haaland is the first Norwegian to receive the award from the Italian sports newspaper Tuttosport. Haaland has been voted on by 40 journalists from several of the world’s leading media.
– I am very happy to have won this fantastic and prestigious award. I’m honored and proud of that, Haaland tells Tuttosport.com on Monday.
Haaland is in great company. Last year the award went to João Félix, in 2018 to Matthijs de Ligt and in 2017 to Kylian Mbappé. Lionel Messi, Wayne Rooney and Sergio Agüero are others who have won the Golden Boy.
– There are names that speak for themselves. It is a great honor for me to be part of this circle, but above all a huge motivation to do it better, emphasizes Haaland.
Haaland says family, friends and colleagues have been very happy for him. But there was also a bit of humor from his teammate and veteran Mats Hummels.
– The one who made fun of me the most was Hummels. He told me in the dressing room that it was not true, that it was a lie and that the vote was invalid, says the council of power.
Haaland’s impressive performances with Borussia Dormund, both in the Bundesliga and the Champions League, were crucial to his becoming this year’s Golden Boy. Now the goal is to improve even more.
– My goal is to do better and better. I am a fighter, one who never gives up, says Haaland who dreams of great titles:
– Of course I want to win titles with Dortmund. Winning the Champions League is obviously a great dream. Bayern are the best team in the world right now, and we must try to reach a higher level and beat them. We will try everything we have.
Dad Alfie Haaland congratulated his son during the live broadcast Monday night.
– Many thanks to Tuttosport who has given the Golden Boy award to my son. It’s a fantastic price, so all of Norway, and maybe even Scandinavia, thank you for this price, he says.
