The author, who published his first novel in 1961, was actually named David Cornwell. But he used his artist name throughout his career.
He became world famous for his spy novels as early as the 60s and 70s. Among his most famous novels are The spy who came from the cold (Norwegian title: The spy who came from the cold) of 1963 and Tinker Tailor Solider Spy (Norwegian title: The mole) fra1974.
He worked in British intelligence in the 1950s and early 1960s, but became a full-time writer after its successful launch in 1963. It became an international bestseller.
In all, there were 25 spy novels. Several of them were inspired to a greater or lesser extent by experiences in their own lives.
Up to ten of the novels deal with the fictional agent George Smiley, who was already featured in his first novel in 1963. The last of the Smiley books came in 2017: A legacy of spies (Norwegian title: The legacy of the spies).
Several of his books have been made into movies.
