- Everton – Chelsea 1-0 (1-0)
Everton’s victory means they remain very evenly ahead in the Premier League, only four points from number eight (Manchester United with 20 points) to number one (Tottenham with 24). Everton are in seventh place with the same score as United.
Chelsea remain at 22 points in third place, so Tottenham and Liverpool can get a five-point difference to Chelsea with victories on Sunday.
On Saturday, Chelsea struggled to outwit Everton of their former coach Carlo Ancelotti. Gylfi Sigurdsson gave the hosts the advantage with a penalty score. Dominic Calvert-Lewin was downed by Chelsea goalkeeper Edouard Mendy, and Sigurdsson was icy from the chalk mark.
It was the climax of a well-played first half, where Reece James was closer to Chelsea with his shot off the post.
Everton were helped by a good Jordan Pickford in goal, and in the moments when the goalkeeper was outgunned, like when Mason Mount hit the frame twice after the break, the margins were on Everton’s side.
On Tuesday, Wolverhampton are absent for Chelsea, while Everton faces Leicester on Wednesday.
