Joe Biden and Kamala Harris named “Person of the Year”

LAST: Just before 5 a.m. Friday, the Person of the Year is announced: Upcoming President Joe Biden and his Vice President Kamala Harris are the Times’ Person of the Year 2020.

According to editor-in-chief Edward Felsenthal, the two are named because they show that “the power of empathy is greater than the anger that divides us.”

Every US president since Franklin D. Roosevelt has been named person of the year during his tenure, but Biden is the first to be named before taking office.

It is also the first time that an incoming vice president or vice president has been named Person of the Year.

From night to Friday Norwegian time, the American news magazine Time names “Person of the Year”. Since 1927, the American magazine has given the award each year to a person, group or organization that has had the greatest influence over the past year.

Last year, it was Swedish climate activist Greta Thunberg who took home the generous award.

This year, four candidates are considered by the editors of the Times as the person who has most influenced our news or who lives the most, for better or for worse, Time writes.

Here are the candidates and the Times’ reasons for the nomination:

Joe Biden – Incoming President of the Democrats

In a historic and unique election, Joe Biden was named the 46th President of the United States. He beat former President Barack Obama’s record for the most votes ever cast for a presidential candidate.

Donald Trump: the outgoing president of the Republicans

– Like every year of his presidency, Trump has made a big impact in 2020. His administration has been heavily criticized for its response to the crown pandemic. After losing the election, he has unjustifiably claimed that it was a scam and claimed that he himself is the winner.

– The Covid-19 pandemic has left the world in suspense. But everyone who is considered essential – such as healthcare workers, postal workers, sanitation workers, transportation workers and many more – had to carry on. They risked their lives and in doing so saved countless lives. One of those who spends part of their day making rounds in the hospital is Dr. Anthony Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases and the most visible scientific leader in the United States for 2020.

– George Floyd’s tragic death started a movement, not just in America, but around the world. In the midst of a global pandemic, protesters took to the streets demanding action to combat unfair treatment by the police and any entity that embodies systematic discrimination. There have been some positive results since the movement began, but it is far from over.

Dagbladet is following the case.
