Big recession for Solskjær – United has ended in Champions League – NRK Sport – Sports news, results and broadcast schedule

– We started too late. It was a testament to strong team spirit to come back, but you can’t give a team a 3-0 lead and then hope to move on, Solskjær told BT Sport after the match.

– Of course it cannot be said that we were good enough, because we were not. But it was a difficult group. The big loss for us was away against Istanbul, that’s where we lost the points that we should have, Solskjær thinks.

– Today we were close, but we knew we had to defend ourselves. As a soccer player, you cannot feel sorry for yourself. You can do that for a few minutes tonight, then we have to focus on Saturday’s game, says the United manager after the loss.

Solskjær has now lost six of his 10 Champions League matches as a coach, according to the BBC.

– This was weak. A bad United game, says NRK football expert Morten Morisbak Skjønsberg.

– This puts more pressure on United in the national series, you think.

The stakes were high for both teams in this meeting, that is, further advancement in the Champions League.

Manchester United only needed a draw against Leipzig to secure promotion to the Champions League.

– They missed that opportunity. It was an uncomfortable team, both in attack and defense, says Skjønsberg.

Shock start

Solskjær got off to a real start with the settlement. Already two minutes later, Angeliño sent the locals in advantage with a shot in the corner from about 16 meters.

A surprised United ended up on their heels early on, and offensive Leipzig controlled much of the game in the opening of the first half.

Indeed, Solskjær’s men had yet to have a proper scoring opportunity when Amadou Haidara doubled the lead after 13 minutes of play.

On this occasion, scorer Angeliño contributed with a goal pass, which Haidara equalized by putting the ball into the 12-meter volley goal.

At this point, Leipzig was playing United. Half an hour later it could also have been 3-0 when Willi Orban put the ball behind David de Gea, but after a check with the VAR referees it was concluded offside.

Harry Maguire believes that the team created very little in the first place.

– In the second part we gave everything, he says.

– I do not want to make excuses, adds BT Sport.

– We have to go out and be aggressive, win the ball. That’s the basics.

I had to avoid loss

Initially, United just had to avoid losing in this deal.

Manchester United, PSG and Leipzig had nine points in this group heading into the last round of the group stage. But with a points split, Alexander Sørloth’s Leipzig would remain behind both teams in the table.

United still couldn’t create anything in the first 45 minutes.

The team still seemed better organized when they took to the field in the second half. However, the home side switched to a more defensive game and were good at defending against United’s visit in front of Leipzig’s goal.

Penalties

Both Pogba and Sørloth started on the bench for their teams in the settlement. After 61 minutes, Pogba replaced Nemanja Matic. Sørloth never had a chance on the grass this time.

The game turned 69 minutes when Justin Kluivert scored the third in the afternoon for Leipzig and added the total humiliation for Manchester United.

But just as the game was decided, the United team launched an offensive and created a new tension.

United got a reduction 10 minutes before regulation time when Bruno Fernandes safely put the ball into the goal from the penalty spot. And then just minutes later, Solskjær’s men had a new hope when Leipzig’s Ibrahima Konaté was system on the ball.

The final sprint was still too late.

United came to Tuesday’s game after the team managed to convert Saturday’s game against West Ham.

This time they failed. Just over a month after United beat Leipzig 5-0 in the opposite game at Old Trafford.

The NRK football expert now sees the debate surrounding Solskjær’s position as United manager to intensify.

– That debate continues all the time, he says.

It is currently unclear what will happen to the distribution of points to PSG after the agreement between the French team and Turkey’s Basaksehir was interrupted following accusations of racism. At the time of writing this report, it has not been restarted.
