Christmas trains fill up

Last week, Prime Minister Erna Solberg (H) and the government came out and said that going home for Christmas can be seen as a necessary trip.

This has caused a flood of reservations with the train companies.

Vy says now that there is a lot of pressure starting on the Bergen line train departures on December 22 and 23.

– What we see is that there are many who plan to travel to their cabins, Vys communications manager Åge-Christoffer Lundeby tells NTB.

– So there is a lot of pressure up to Geilo, but less pressure the other way around.

Sold out between Oslo and Trondheim

On the trains between Oslo and Trondheim, it is already full more or less for the whole of December 22, reports SJ.

At the same time, the trains fill up quickly on December 23 and December 18-21. SJ expects many of these outings to be sold out completely.

Go-Ahead has also seen an increase in the number of reservations after the government press conference last week. But in Sørlandsbanen there is still capacity available.

– Although we may experience closer to Christmas that we have sold-out trains, we believe that we will bring everyone home for Christmas, press contact Dag Brekkan tells NTB.

He says the pressure is greatest between Oslo and Kristiansand.

– We still don’t have any trains that are completely full. But it will be more and more with each passing day.

Extra capacity

On the Bergen line, Vy has installed 8,500 additional seats during the Christmas season. But these tickets have already gone on sale and the company won’t get more than that, according to Lundeby.

– So if you say that you can’t travel with that train, it’s because it’s so reserved that you can’t sell more tickets there in terms of infection control.

Infection control rules mean that if you buy a single ticket, you will get a single double seat. If you book as a group in a cohort, you can sit closer.

SJ still has the opportunity to increase capacity between Oslo and Trondheim.

– If it gets very crowded, we may need to consider installing a few more cars. But we can’t configure more outputs. We don’t have a route owner for that, Business Director Lena Angela Nesteby tells NTB.

He fears that many do not think that the trains can be sold out.

– But it could be this year.
