TV: Almost full holding on “Every Time We Meet – Anniversary” tonight – and last night for hosts Tshawe and Silya. They are replaced by Morten Abel and Marion Ravn, who are “preparing” for the role tonight. Magnus Grønneberg (CC Cowboys), Hans Petter Aaserud (Trang Fødsel) and Ø claim “Elg” Elgenes also entered. Tonight there was also a lot of emotion. And laughs.
Morten Abel: «The minute» (Børge Fjordheim / Marion Ravn)
Marion sets a new record for sips, just a minute after Morten has said he will sing “The Minute.” It was the first song to come out after he recorded it at Morten’s studio in Stavanger. She was invited there after they met on “Every Time We Met” in 2013, so the ring ends.
But Marion has a momentum in the original that Morten either doesn’t want or can’t match at all. It will be a pale and slightly harsh version of the song, where the piano and strings have been replaced by a more anonymous variant similar to September When with a touch of electronics. Abel does little to lift the song, so this will be just a stage of pure transport.
Elk: “I both always go alone” (Morten Abel)
Elg sings Mods, the world famous band in Stavanger who has filled the city’s stadium three times. And this is at least difficult!
Elg represented the “Every Time We Meet” moment when he sang “The Brain Is Alone” by deLillos in 2014. He may never be able to match that, but he has to think of something! He does this song, written by a pure young Morten Abel, with a touch of Kristiansund. Then it will be “We both go alone until the end”! He lowers it in tempo and throws it in a fresh rooted direction, with a lot of guitar and a bit of violin in the back. It seems like this song is in the middle of nowhere for Elg, who conveys it with his warm, laid-back hippie look.
Magnus Grønneberg: “Storm” (Ø claim Elgenes / Petter Ellingsen)
Tonight, obviously, everything will be in the difficult corner. – I don’t have your voice and I have to do it my way, says Magnus. Quickly means that it’s pulled in the direction of CC Cowboys, here with a slightly different chorus, and with Marion and Silya as backup singers.
It’s easy to understand that it ends there, because this could easily have been a CC Cowboys song. He and Elg are very similar as songwriters, only with a slightly different geographical starting point. There may not be such a storm in Fredrikstad, but Magnus is good at “pretending”. The song takes on more intensity after a while and Marie Klåpbakken’s violin fills up really well, then it just so happens that Magnus lights up a bit on the harmonica in the butt. Best so far.
Marion Ravn: “I’m the best thing that ever happened to you” (Hans Petter Aaserud)
Wow, this was refreshing! Marion “wears” the electric guitar, because now she’s going to rock. It is not unknown to her, so the starting point is good.
The title is suitably rude, the chorus is catchy, and the lyrics are written by an “angry man”, straight to the point and pretty tough on “picky” women. Marion is unprovoked and has no problem living in trouble, at least not after Hans Petter has explained why the song was written. He has become a rocker on the edge of punk, with more energy even than the original. And it benefits from a tensioner. Marion just steals this pop single with Trang Fødsel from 2018 and makes it more interesting, and better, musically, with the good help of house guitarist Truls Hval. Rockers are scarce, and this is the best thing that could have happened to this song.
Hans Petter Aaserud: “Canopy Bed” (Magnus Grønneberg)
– Now I have simply become a fan of the CC Cowboys, says Hans Petter after immersing himself in Magnus’ 30-year career. So my question is: Why did it take so long?
And surprisingly, the head of Trang Fødsel has not chosen a song with the jubilant band, but a duet with Magnus and his daughter Hanna-Maria from their first joint album project “In the shadow of an angel” (2013). But it’s a wise choice, and the song wins the performance here.
“Canopy Bed” has a very personal and good text that Hans Petter handles quite well at first. But the chorus makes the difference. Only when six men enter does the song get the boost it needs.
Tshawe Baqwa: “Last night” (Chile Nymoen / Scott Adam Jacoby)
Tshawe has chosen an old song, recorded in New York, when she tells her to have it for the lady who has shared the hosts with the first shows.
Even before you start, you announce that you have a surprise, to lift your spirits a bit more. Turns out it’s “just” Marion, but turning this song into a sultry duo is a very good move. What begins in a kind of crooner style with Tshawe and the band ends as a thrilling R&B song, with two flirtatious vocalists with matching voices. The best of the evening.
“Every time we meet – anniversary” returns next Friday with Chris Holsten, Åse Kleveland, Frida Ånnevik and Unni Wilhelmsen as new guests.
