There was a veil of sadness over the memorial service that was held on Wednesday morning in the German city of Trier. Several mourned openly for those who lost their lives and were injured in the car attack in the city center on Tuesday.
An unemployed German electrician (51) is said to have caused the tragedy in the small German town of Trier on Tuesday.
Shock and grief characterize Germany after some 20 people were killed on one of the city’s pedestrian streets on Tuesday. Five people died, 15 were injured and some are in mortal danger.
Wednesday was a memorial service for the five dead. Among them were a nine-month-old baby and his 45-year-old father. The mother and one-and-a-half-year-old son are being treated at the hospital.
The motive for the atrocity is not yet known. But a police spokesman told the German press that the perpetrator has started speaking out.

Without political motivation
– The police say they answer questions, but they don’t want to say anything about the answers they have given. What is known is that the tragedy caused by the 51-year-old man was not politically motivated. He has no affiliation with any organization and should not have had assistants, says German journalist Per Hinrichs in Die Welt, to VG.
– It seems to be a terrible tragic event. Police have not yet decided whether to jail the man or leave him for psychiatric treatment.
Trier Mayor Wolfram Leibe has stated that there are many indications that the 51-year-old author is struggling with mental problems.
The German press reports that the 51-year-old is a German citizen and resident of Trier.
Must be an unemployed electrician. The car he was driving with zigzagging down the pedestrian street, a Land Rover, is said to have borrowed from a friend.

The perpetrator is said to have lived in the car recently, had a drinking problem and, according to police information, drove 1.4 per thousand during the fateful drive through downtown Trier.
There are rumors that the man, who was arrested shortly after the tragic incident, has expressed misogynistic attitudes on social media.
Trier, a small German city with 110,000 inhabitants. It is located near the border with Luxembourg and was founded by the Romans about 2000 years ago.
Trier is considered one of the oldest cities in Germany.
