Tor Langmyr of Drangedal couldn’t believe his eyes as the heavy animal came flying over the side.
On Saturday morning, Langmyr was driving from Sannidal to his home in Drangedal on Vestfold and Telemark. He had reached the halfway point when something incredible happened.
– I came to a rock cut, and there I saw a moose with its legs in the air coming down from the sky. It was a strange sight, says the 77-year-old.
– You don’t have time to react, so to speak, other than trying to hold the steering wheel more tightly, he adds.
Langmyr says the moose hit the right side of the hood and followed the car for five to ten meters before hitting the mountain wall.
– I was afraid that this would come through the windshield, he says.
He came out unscathed from the incident: – I have peace
As a resident of a forest municipality, the 77-year-old is used to encountering elk on the road. In the past, he had always managed to stop when he was run over or got in the way, he says.
– I had no chance here. It was also quite large and heavy, from a year and a half to two years.
Langmyr was not injured in the collision, but the coolant tank was damaged and therefore he had to contact the rescue vehicle. While he waited, the wildlife committee arrived at the scene. So did a hunting team from the Drangedal area.
– They had rifles with them, but the moose was stone dead. It was inside the closet, he says.
– How are you now?
– It’s basically fine with me. I’m calm. The police sent me to the ER and yours and mine, but I said “just quit and say everything is fine.” The airbag did not activate, so everything is fine. It was only material damage and that the animal was dead like a herring.

– The moose was so damaged that a contractor removes it and buries it. It was some distance in the forest.
He tells the leader of the wildlife committee in Kragerø Snorre Øien, who was called to the scene after the accident.
– Not every day you have a flying moose that lands in the car, it was very bad luck.
Øien says this isn’t the first time they’ve had flying moose this year, but that it was the fall itself that took the life of the previous moose.
– He didn’t land on a car, he ended up on the side of the road with a broken neck. At the same time it had fallen 15 meters, while here it was around three meters. This moose probably would have done well if he hadn’t come across the car.
Fortunately, he notes, it is not often that large game is found in this way, although it is not an unusual way for moose to die.
– Sometimes they skip the edges if there is something good to eat and then they slip. Most animals do not die of old age, they walk on ice and fall down slopes and become inflamed. Fortunately, they don’t usually end up in the front of cars, Øien says.
