The rock slid down the side of the mountain and cut across the county road between Bergen and Osterøy on Thursday night.

Fortunately, there was no one on the county road in the Osterøy town of Bruvik about 30 km northeast of Bergen when the landslide occurred Thursday night. The landslide was reported by the highway contractor around 9pm.

Geologist Mari Åmellom Brøto in Vestland County Municipality has calculated the volume of the tombstone to be at least 25 cubic meters.

– The road is impacted by at least one large rock, which weighs about 65 tons, says the geologist.

He arrived at the crash site at 9 a.m. Friday and has been working to map the damage and consider rebuilding the road.

Bergens Tidende is one of several media outlets that have reported on the landslide.

The newspaper writes that a scheduled Tide bus passed just before the landslide.

– The bus driver did not notice the landslide. But there was communication between the traffic department at Tide and the bus driver at the back of the landslide, and the driver has been followed and well served, says regional manager Rune Mannseth at Tide to BT.

Single road for all traffic

Mari Åmellom Brøto tells VG that the stone came loose on the rock wall about 200 meters above sea level. The huge rock took with it dirt, other boulders and trees, which have also hit the road.

The rock continued towards the sea.

The county road is the only public road to the city of Bruvik, says the geologist.

– There is a local road through which normal traffic can circulate, but it is not for heavy vehicles.

It can be opened in a month.

It will take some time before the road can be reopened.

– My job today has been to find the area where the rock fell off and assess the danger of further landslides in relation to the incident. Then I considered running through the avalanche, he says.

The geologist says they will spend a couple of days clearing the mountainside and knocking down some loose boulders in a controlled manner.

– We must start the reconstruction by filling again and building a wall before we can repair the road, he says.

Currently, the work is estimated to take about a month.

– If we are lucky, the road can be opened earlier, he says.
