Finnish KNL Networks Buyer – E24

Telenor’s subsidiary, Telenor Maritime, offers mobile satellite connections to cruise, ferry and offshore fleets around the world.

They have now signed an agreement to buy 100 percent of KNL Networks of Finland. Telenor informs E24 that the parties will not issue the sale price.

KNL Networks started in 2011 and offers solutions for civil and military shipping.

The company has developed a mesh network, which in theory is somewhat similar to what many people use at home on modern Wi-Fi networks.

Connect ships

KNL’s radio system allows users to establish their own independent network with a range of a few to many thousands of kilometers.

In the same way that a home mesh system uses multiple nodes to create a single network throughout the house, KNL’s system does the same at sea: multiple ships can connect and have access to the network on land, even if just a really grounded ship.

Telenor notes that KNL’s system also enables ships to access “critical IoT communications” on board, that is, to connect to onboard devices and equipment that can communicate wirelessly using mobile technology.
