On Tuesday, Hurtigruten announced that its businesses will be divided into two different units. Work on the reorganization began even before the pandemic, the company says.
– It’s about manipulating the Hurtigruten Group for the future. The new organization sets the course for further growth and development both for regular traffic along the Norwegian coast and for expedition cruises. This ensures an even sharper focus and an even clearer distinction between two completely unique products and concepts, Hurtigruten Group CEO Daniel Skjeldam says in a press release Tuesday afternoon.
In the report, the company writes that the two units, Hurtigruten Norway and Hurtigruten Expeditions, will be cultivated purely as separate units.
Asta Lassesen will be the managing director of Hurtigruten’s global expedition cruise, the company says. The recruitment process for the CEO of Hurtigruten Norway is ongoing.
Seven ships
Starting in 2021, Hurtigruten Norway will operate seven ships in scheduled traffic between Bergen and Kirkenes. The company has been operating this business since 1893. Tender traffic will be reduced from eleven to seven ships starting in the New Year.

Hurtigruten Norway will be operated from Tromsø and the ships will sail under the Norwegian flag, with Norwegian and Nordic crews.
– Hurtigruten Norway will have a turnover as large as the entire Hurtigruten group had when we started the major exchange operation in 2012. The turnover included both scheduled traffic, expedition ships and extensive bus operations. That says a bit about size, says Skjeldam.
– Until the beginning
At the same time, Hurtigruten will gather its expedition cruise business into a separate unit, with its own organization and management team, with Asta Lassesen as CEO.
Hurtigruten Expeditions will consist of a fleet of at least eight expedition ships, the company writes in the press release.
The unit will be managed from Oslo and Hamburg.

Each year, the Hurtigruten Expedition Cruise sails to more than 250 different destinations. The ships will sail with a mix of Norwegian and international crews. Hurtigruten has a letter of intent with the German family business BSM, and parts of the operation will be carried out through a Hamburg joint venture.
