Several people were shot and killed in a shopping center in a suburb of Milwaukee, Wisconsin. The perpetrator has not been arrested.
At a press conference Friday night, the Wauwatosa Police Chief said eight people were injured, one of them a teenager. The perpetrator was not at the scene when police arrived, the police chief says.
The police chief claims that there are several false rumors about the identity of the perpetrator, but what the police know is that he is a white man in his 20s or 30s who has not yet been identified or arrested.
– We don’t know if the shooter is still in the mall, says Police Chief Barry Weber at the press conference.
The injured have been rushed to hospital, but none of them should have life-threatening injuries.
Mass emergency response
Multiple photos on social media and surveillance photos of the parking lot outside the center show a dozen cars from police and other emergency services.
– Everyone ran out of the center. It was around 2:50 p.m. (local time). It looked like they were on the first floor downtown, says Carol, an employee at American WISN 12’s “Knew What to Do” store.
Television footage from WISN 12 showed several people being taken from the center to ambulances and several units of the political police entered the center wearing full protective gear.
– panic
A witness tells the channel that they heard eight shots inside the mall. Another tells the sentinel for the Milwuakee newspaper that he ran to the mall, where his uncle has two kiosks, to find out what had happened. The uncle is said to have been shot twice in the foot.
Others describe the incident as “very scary.” Panic broke out and people ran out of the center.
– It was very scary. I was very nervous when we didn’t know what was going on. But now I’m safe and I know no one can get in, so I’m fine. But it was very scary and a little panic, says Cecilia Guerrero (20).
